Elmira Jackals News Release
Behind four tallies by center Justin Donati, the Elmira Jackals cruised to an 11-3 victory over the Gwinnett Gladiators in Duluth, Ga. Saturday night, snapping a five game losing streak. The 11 goals were the most scored by the Jackals since the team joined the ECHL in 2007-2008. Looking for their first win since Oct. 31, the Jackals came flying out of the gate with three first period goals.
Chris Korchinski, playing in his first game since Nov. 6 due to an upper body injury, put the Jackals up 1-0 at 3:51 of the first period. Maxime Gratchev raced up the left wing and found Korchinski in front, who beat Gladiators goaltender Danny Taylor for the early lead.
Later in the period, Justin Donati recorded the first of his six points on the evening. Donati held the puck in the offensive zone and found Keegan Dansereau backdoor who tipped it past Taylor at 16:56 for the 2-0 advantage.
24 seconds later, former Gladiator Brennan Turner fired a wrist shot home from the blue line for his first goal of the season, and the Jackals led 3-0 entering the first intermission.
In the second period, Guillaume Lepine knocked home his first of the season. Gratchev created a scramble in front off a shot, and a loose puck came to Lepine with Taylor sprawled out and Lepine gave the Jackals the 4-0 lead at 4:47 of the second.
Although the Jackals controlled the game's momentum to that point, their night was just beginning. Justin Donati scored four straight goals, with the first coming at 6:53 of the second period on the power play. Tyler Donati had the puck along the left wing side on the goal line, and fed it toward Justin Donati with the puck deflecting off of Gratchev's stick along the way. Justin Donati skated from behind the net and walked in front and shot the puck past Taylor for the 5-0 lead.
Justin Donati notched his second goal of the game at 8:28 on the power play. Tyler fired a shot from the right circle that was stopped by Taylor, who gave the rebound right to Justin Donati who knocked it in for the 6-0 lead.
After two Gladiator goals by Adam Berti and Matt Caruana, Justin Donati scored the first Jackals hat trick since December of 2008. The Donati brothers had a two-on-one, with Tyler finding Justin in front for a one-timer for his third goal of the game at 16:13 of the second.
Patrick Galivan scored at 1:26 of the third period to make it a 7-3 game.
At 5:05 of the third period, Justin Donati became the first Jackal to score four goals in a game since the team joined the ECHL. Tyler found Justin cutting into the slot, who knocked it past Taylor for the 7-3 lead. Later in the period, Justin Donati found Dansereau in the high slot who fired a quick wrister past Taylor for the 9-3 lead at 9:39 of the third period.
Wes Cunningham was able to draw a penalty shot at 11:02 of the third period. Cunningham deked Taylor and slid the puck past him for the 10-3 lead with his first goal of the season.
Capping the scoring for the Jackals was Korchinski, who one-timed a feed from Mat Robinson past Taylor for the 11th goal of the game for the Jackals at 12:16 of the third.
Michael-Lee Teslak stopped 36 of 39 Gladiators shots for his fourth win of the season. Taylor made 27 stops on 38 Jackals shots in the loss.
The Jackals set multiple records for 2009-2010 in the win:
- Their 11 goals are the most goals scored by a team this season. - The eight goal margin of victory is the largest in the ECHL this season. - The 29 points and 18 assists are the most by a team this season. - Justin Donati's four goals are the most by any player in the league this season.
The Jackals head back to Charlotte, N.C. tonight for a 5:00 p.m. game with the Checkers on Sunday.
