November 14, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release

Wheeling, WV -The Nailers scored 3 straight goals in a wild 3rd period to dramatically take a 5-4 lead but the Johnstown Chiefs put in a couple late ones for a 6-5 overtime decision at WesBanco Arena Saturday night. It was the 3rd straight overtime contest between the two teams with Wheeling having won the first two.

Mike Bartlett's jam home on a mass crash of the net at 2:05 into overtime was the game-winner. This followed Chris Zarb's controversial game-tying goal at 18:24 of the 3rd that made it 5-5. Jordan Parise, on in relief of Adam Berkhoel, made several terrific saves with the Chiefs blasting away right on top of him. Eventually the puck was pushed into the net as the cage was knocked ajar of the pegs but the officials ruled it was a goal. Parise disputed the call but the decision stood and the disputed decision stood. It was Zarb's first game for the Chiefs as he had been acquired from the Gwinnett Gladiators earlier in the week.

Wheeling had trailed 4-2 heading into the 3rd period but an Aaron Clarke break-away goal and a pair of Alex Grant lamp-lighters thrust the home team into the lead in a 3 goal stretch of roughly 5 minutes. Grant's second straight slap-shot goal from the blue-line with 7:07 remaining in the 3rd sent the WesBanco crowd into a frenzy as the Nailers led 5-4. But the Chiefs were able to take advantage of the remaining time to forge a comeback of their own.

Wheeling set a season high for shots on goal as they outshot Johnstown 44-26. It was the 4th straight game for the Nailers outshooting their opponents. They also established a new high for power play goals with three including a pair of first period power-play goals from Thomas Beauregard. The Montreal, Quebec native is now tied for 3rd in the ECHL in goals with 10 and has 3 goals in his last 2 games.

Moises Gutierrez also had a pair of goals in the 1st for the Chiefs both times tying the score at 1-1 and later at 2-2.

Gutierrez was initially credited with the game-tying goal in the 3rd period but the scoring decision was changed to Zarb to deny him the hat-trick.

Johnstown had taken a 4-2 lead in the 2nd period beginning with a goal from Matt Robinson off the back of Adam Berkhoel at 2:15. Later in the 2nd, a shot on the power play from Trevor Hendrix from the point rolled through Berkhoel giving the Chiefs a 4-2 lead. Berkhoel was replaced by Jordan Parise at that point and the Nailers responded in front of their new netminder in the 3rd with the comeback that ended up not being quite enough to get the two points.

Wheeling has 5 points out of a possible 6 over their last 3 games as their record stands at 4-7-2 for 10 standings points. Wheeling has played 3 straight overtime games and is 2-1 in overtime on the year. They are 3-2 in games going past regulation including their 1-1 mark in shootouts.

The Nailers have a few days off before returning to action next Friday and Saturday, November 20 and 21 at the Elmira Jackals.
