Johnstown Chiefs News Release

WHEELING, Wv. - The Johnstown Chiefs took down the Wheeling Nailers with a 6-5 win in overtime at WesBanco Arena on Saturday.

The win improved Johnstown's record to 3-6-3, giving the team at least one point in each of its last five games.

Saturday's game started off in similar fashion to Friday's game with Wheeling scoring early from Thomas Beauregard. The wing from Montreal scored on a power play just 26 seconds into the game with Mike Bartlett off for holding. The similarities to Friday didn't stop there, though, because Moises Gutierrez provided the answer with a goal to tie from in close. His shot from along the goal line banked off of a Wheeling defender and past Adam Berkhoel at 7:44. Beauregard came right back with another power play marker at 11:21, but Gutierrez, not wanting to be shown up, redirected a Jarrett Konkle shot on the power play for his second of the game at 17:12.

Over its last two games Johnstown had been outscoring its opponents six to nothing, and that success continued on Saturday. Matt Robinson scored at even strength and Trevor Hendrikx added his second power play goal of the season to build the Chiefs' first lead of the evening. On Robinson's goal, he took a rebound of Greg Gallagher's point shot and banked it off of Berkhoel's left arm and into the net. Connor Shields added an assist on Robinson's third of the season at 2:15. At 14:33 Hendrikx blasted a point shot through Berkhoel's legs and chased the former ECHL Goalie of the Year from the game as he was replaced by Jordan Parise. Konkle and Bryan Marshall earned the assists on Hendrikx' goal.

Saturday's game continued to mirror the pattern that Chiefs' games had followed all week. Wheeling fought back with three goals to take a brief 5-4 lead instead of just tying the game. Aaron Clarke and Alex Grant each scored at even strength 3:38 apart to knot the game and Grant added one on the power play at 12:53. With the result looking bleak in the final minutes, the Chiefs turned to the man who had drawn them even the previous two times in the game. With a loose puck in the crease generated by a Robinson one-timer, Gutierrez stormed in to stuff it past Parise and force overtime.

In the extra frame, the Chiefs wasted no time going on the offensive. With two shots already on the board in overtime, a delayed penalty was forthcoming against Wheeling.. As Mayotte raced to the bench for the extra attacker, Mike Bartlett took a great centering feed from Shields and wristed it home for his fourth of the season and first game winner.

Mayotte made 39 saves in picking up the victory while the Chiefs went 2-for-3 on the power play and 4-for-7 on the penalty kill.
