Royals Get Shootout Win In Trenton, 4-3

November 14, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
Reading Royals News Release

Trenton, NJ - The Reading Royals of the ECHL (7-4-1-116, 2nd East Division), affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, beat the Trenton Devils in a shootout, 4-3, at the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, New Jersey. This marked the fifth time (out of seven wins) this season that Reading, who trailed twice in this game, has come back from a deficit to pull out the two points. Royals' goaltender Matt Dalton (1-1-0-0; 27/30; 5/5 in shootout) picked up his first pro win. Trenton's Gerald Coleman (3-1-0-2; 31/34; 4/5 in shootout) sustained the shootout loss-but still has not been beaten in regulation by the Royals in eleven games over three seasons (9-0-2). Reading got the game tying goal in the third period while playing on the team's seventh power play of the night (1-8); Trenton's power play was held off the board in seven chances with the man advantage.

Trenton struck 6:36 into the game when Brett Wilson fired a hard snap shot from just off the left half-wall that beat Dalton low glove side. 18:55 into the first, Royals' defenseman Dinos Stamoulis stepped up in the neutral zone and hit Jeremy Akeson as a pass was coming from deep in the defensive zone towards him. Stamoulis received a major penalty for interference and a game misconduct; but it was the Royals who would capitalize during the major power play sequence for Trenton. With just 7.5 seconds left in the first, the Royals initiated a short-handed rush, and Andrew Sarauer carried deep on the left wing side to below the goal line. Sarauer fed Ben Gordon at the top of the crease, and Gordon slipped it through for his fifth of the year.

After a scoreless second, the Royals took the lead-albeit for a brief moment-3:33 into the third when Daniel Steiner ripped a shot from the mid-slot that hit Coleman in the upper body and ricocheted to the right side of the net where it hit a hard-charging Gordon and fluttered into the net, giving Gordon his third two-goal game of the year. Trenton bounced quickly back, when Tony Zancanaro stole on the end wall and fed Myles Stoez behind the Royals' net. Stoez came out from behind the net with a hard, wrap and jam to tie the game at two 5:25 into the third. The Devils regained the lead thirty-eight seconds later when Andy Thomas ripped one from the left point that beat Dalton low glove side. The Royals rebounded to tie the game for the third time at the 8:37 mark of the third while playing with the man advantage. Steiner shot from the left circle and Coleman made the stop-but Olivier Labelle was able to slip it in for his second goal of the year. The teams played scoreless through the remainder of regulation and overtime; and it required the shootout for resolution. Only one player, Labelle-shooting fifth for the Royals-found pay-dirt in the shootout; but that's all it took for Reading to take the two points out of the Trenton in the first of what will be seven games this year at Sovereign Bank Arena.

The Royals travel to Estero, Florida, for a three game series against the Florida Everblades next week (Wednesday, November 18; Friday, November 20; and Saturday, November 21). Opening face-off on all three games is scheduled for 7:30 pm. Next Wednesday's broadcast time is 7:00 pm on the Royals Radio Network presented by Transmissions by Arbogast.
