Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Former Ace Gino Guyer, playing his first game of the season, had an assist on his first shift and scored the winner in overtime as Bakersfield never trailed in a 3-2 victory Friday before 5,005 at Sullivan Arena.
The Aces have gone a club-record nine straight games without a win in regulation, but have earned points in five of those nine contests (3-4-2) to remain only three points behind Idaho in the West Division. Alaska, owners of second place by two points over Utah, now sits at 7-4-2 overall, 4-1-2 on home ice, heading into tomorrow's rematch with the Pacific Division-leading Condors (8-5). The game will be broadcast live on the flagship home of Alaska pro hockey, KFQD 750 AM, with coverage getting underway at 7:00 p.m., 15 minutes prior to the opening face-of f.
Guyer's assist came on a wrist shot by John de Gray that handcuffed Aces starter Scott Reid, who quickly settled down and stopped 36 of the next 37 shots that came his away. Already up 1-0, Bakersfield had a couple of power play opportunities to stretch its lead, but instead gave up a shorthanded goal to Scott Burt at 3:58 of the first period, the second shortie of the year for the Alaska captain and the team's league-leading seventh of the season. Kyle Calder answered with a back-door tap-in at 7:56, but less than three minutes later, Curtis Fraser potted his first goal in an Aces sweater on a rebound and the score stood at 2-2.
The game remained tied over the final 50 minutes of regulation, with Alaska out-shooting the Condors 11-8 in the second period but getting out-shot 14-7 in the third. Bakersfield finished the night 0-for-8 on the power play, including a five-on-three for 1:06, but claimed victory when Guyer kept the puck on his stick on the first chance in overtime and whistled a wrist shot just inside the left post at 2:32.
