Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - In a Friday night matchup, the Victoria Salmon Kings and Ontario Reign met in the second of a three-game set at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. The Salmon Kings started Matt Keetley in net while the Reign countered with Curtis Darling.

The Reign took advantage of an early power play 4:00 into the period when a pretty cycle play with the puck resulted in defenseman John Landry receiving a pass at the left face-off dot from Tim Kraus who moved from the right corner to around the back of the net to make the pass. Landry beat Keetley with a shot across his body that banked off the post past his blocker and into the net. Landry's goal was his second of the season. Salmon Kings' goaltender Matt Keetley kept the team's deficit at one at the halfway mark of the opening frame when he made a diving save to his right and extended his blocker to deny a quick shot from forward Michael Pelech. The Reign did however take a 2-0 lead shortly after at the 11:46 mark of the first period, when following a turnover, forward Tony Voce moved in all alone on Keetley, who made a save off a backhand move. Keetley was unable to recover to stop the trailing Kraus who pounced on the loose puck to bury his first goal of the season. Ontario would take their 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

Ontario jumped out to a 3-0 lead at the 9:55 point of the second period when Tony Voce took a slot-pass from Geoff Walker and fired a shot past Keetley's glove and into the net. Voce's marker was his team-leading seventh goal of the season. The Salmon Kings got on the board at the 13:40 mark of the second period. A quick wrist shot off the stick of Chad Painchaud in the left faceoff circle was blocked by a diving Shawn Germain. The puck bounced of Germain and right to Kings' captain Wes Goldie, who fired his fourth goal of the campaign past Darling. The Salmon Kings cut the Reign's lead back to one goal when Randall Gelech. The Kings' forward drove hard to the net on a 3-on-2 break and deflected a pass from Chad Painchaud for his first goal in a Victoria uniform. The Reign took the 3-2 lead to the second intermission.

Keetley once again kept the Salmon Kings one goal back early in the third period when he recovered off a scramble to rob Geoff Walker with a glove save on a shot from the left faceoff circle. The Salmon Kings pulled their goaltender in the final minute of the third, but were unable to capitalize. Dwight King added an empty net goal for Ontario. Reign 4 Salmon Kings 2.

The Salmon Kings finished 0/5 = 0.0% on the power play, while the Reign went 1/6=16.7%. Victoria outshot Ontario 35-33.
