Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
BILOXI, Mississippi - Five unanswered goals by the Cincinnati Cyclones allowed the club to claim its seventh straight road win, 6-2, at Mississippi on Friday night. The win also allowed the Cyclones to maintain their one point lead in the North Division standings.
The Cyclones played the game without team captain Barret Ehgoetz, who had lower body surgery earlier in the day and will miss four to six weeks and Jimmy Kilpatrick, who was on assignment to Houston in the AHL. Cincinnati played the game short a man (15 skaters) and with 100 of its 175 goals (57 percent) scored this season out of the lineup.
The teams battled to a 1-1 draw after 20 minutes of play. Cincinnati's Dustin Sproat collected his sixth goal of the season on the power play at 10:05. Rookies Jamie Coghlan and Bryan O'Hanley handed out the assists. As Coghlan dumped the puck in the Mississippi boards, it hit a bump in the boards and shot into the low slot where Sproat was first to the puck and fired it in to the empty net. The Seawolves leveled the scores at 17:20 when Ryan Cruthers picked his team-high 22nd goal of the campaign. The shots on goal favored Cincinnati, 9-3.
Mississippi struck first in the second period, getting a goal from Jeff Kyrzakos at 2:07-his eighth of the year. The Cyclones would bounce back with three goals in less than four minutes to tie the game and build a two goal lead. Matt Syroczynski, who returned to the lineup for the first time in 30 games on Tuesday night, netted his tenth goal of the year from J.T. Wyman and Mark Van Guilder at 4:34 on the power play. Then, at 5:39, Ben McLeod picked up his eighth goal from Brandon Scero. At 8:33, the offensive onslaught continued when Ian McKenzie also added his eighth score of the year from Scero. The shots on goal again favored Cincinnati, 16-4. It was the 16th time this season that the Cyclones scored three or more goals in a period.
The Cyclones scored twice more in the third period to secure the 6-2 win. Justin Johnson stole a puck in the high slot and fired it home for his eighth goal at 6:51. The final goal came from Jake Deitrich, in his Cyclones debut, his eighth of the year at 13:46 from Sproat and Wyman. Cincinnati won the shots battle in the third period, 7-5-and won it for the game, 32-12.
Ryan Nie won his eighth straight game for Cincinnati-setting the club record for wins from the start of his stint with the team. Nie turned aside ten shots in picking up his eighth win with Cincinnati against no losses. Ryan Munce stopped 26 shots in the defeat.
Mark Van Guilder picked up a point for the eleventh straight game-the third-longest streak by a player in the ECHL this season.
The Cyclones are now 26-16-5 on the season, while Mississippi is 18-23-4. The Cyclones play at Mississippi on Saturday night at 8pm. The next MAX-FM game comes on Sunday when the Cyclones finish up the road trip at Mississippi. The pregame is at 5:45pm and faceoff is at 6pm.
