Cyclones Look To Continue Streak

November 10, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Cincinnati Cyclones News Release

COMING UP: The Cincinnati Cyclones, the 2008 Kelly Cup champions, kick off a three game road trip this week. On Wednesday morning, the club is at Johnstown before heading to Elmira for a Friday night showdown. The sojourn ends Sunday afternoon with a venture to Reading.

NEXT UP AT HOME: Wheeling comes in for a pair of games on Friday, November 21 and Saturday, November 22--both games start at 7:30pm. The November 21 game will have the players wearing Montreal Canadiens jerseys that can be purchased in a postgame auction and Donato's Pizza will be one dollar per slice. The November 22 game will be one of the Kid's Club games, with various mascots from the area in attendance.

ROLLING, ROLLING, ROLLING...: The Cyclones are unbeaten in regulation time in their last six games, posting a 4-0-2 record and moving into fifth place in the North Division. The last time Cincinnati had an unbeaten in regulation time streak of at least six games was from March 14-28 of last season--when the club turned in a 6-0-2 mark en route to an eight game run. The third game of that stretch (March 17), was the night the club clinched its first division title in team history.

200!: The win Saturday night was the 200th regular season triumph by a team called the Cincinnati Cyclones at U.S. Bank Arena. The club played its first game in the facility, then known as The Crown on October 4, 1997--a 1-0 shootout loss to Kansas City in front of 13,253 fans. It was the second event (behind a Fleetwood Mac concert) in the newly renovated facility. The first win by a Cyclones team was when the IHL squad took down Cleveland, 3-2, in a shootout behind 25 saves from Geoff Sarjeant on October 15, 1997.

WAY TO GO EGO!: Cyclones center Barret Ehgoetz is riding a four-game assist streak, thre longest current stretch by any Cincinnati player. Ehgoetz moved into fourth place on the club's career point list (116) on Saturday night. The helper on Olivier Latendresse's game winning goal was the 79th with the Cyclones, third-most on the team's career list.

NATURAL BORN KILLERS: The Cyclones penalty kill has become stronger in recent days, having eliminated the last 14 shorthanded situations it has been faced with. Cincinnati has allowed one power play goal in the last 23 opportunites (95.7 percent penalty kill) in the last six games. Entering play last Monday (Nov. 3), the Cyclones ranked next to last (22nd) in the ECHL in penalty kill at 73.5 percent. Starting play this week, the club has vaulted into 18th place at 79.4 percent.

ABOUT SATURDAY: The Cyclones scored in each period to tally a 3-1 win over Elmira to close the homestand. Olivier Latendresse netted the game winner in the second frame, while Kyle Gajewski shut the door 23 times on 24 shots in collecting the victory. Ben Gordon and Thomas Beauregard gathered the other goals for Cincinnati.

ABOUT LAST NIGHT...: The Cyclones dropped a 3-2 shootout decision to Elmira. Jimmy Kilpatrick and T.J. McElroy netted the goals and Kyle Gajewski suffered the shootout loss, turning aside 14 shots.

ABOUT WEDNESDAY NIGHT...: Olivier Latendresse lit the lamp with three goals and added an assist, while Thomas Beauregard chipped in with a pair of goals in leading the Cyclones to a 7-3 demolition of Reading. Kyle Gajewski turned aside 33 shots in picking up the victory, his second straight win. T.J. McElroy netted a goal and handed out a pair of assists in his return game in Cincinnati. The physical nature of the game was evidenced by four fights during the game.

FUNNY NOTE FROM WEDNESDAY...: The victory Wednesday night was the first at U.S. Bank Arena by the Cyclones since winning the Kelly Cup on this surface on June 5. Only two games had been played on the surface since then, but the win came 118 days after clinching the title.

THE SHORT STORY...: The Cyclones have scored three shorthanded goals already this season, the most in the ECHL. On opening night (Oct. 17), Sean Perkins netted Cincinnati's first goal of the season--a man-disadvantage goal. Olivier Latendresse had one last Saturday night in the win at Dayton and Mark Van Guilder had the score on Tuesday night. The Cyclones took advantage of just eleven shorthanded goals all of last season.

GET OUT EARLY AND SCORE!: The Cyclones are averaging nearly two goals per game in the first period this season. The 20 opening stanza lamplighters are the most in the ECHL, eight more than Charlotte, Mississippi and South Carolina (each has twelve).

HAVEN'T WE PLAYED THIS GAME BEFORE?: The Cyclones have had 30 different players play already this season. Cincinnati used 46 players all of last season, in claiming the Kelly Cup. Head Coach Chuck Weber has used nine different lineups this season.

ROSTER CHANGES: Cyclones forward Billy Irish-Baker announced his retirement this morning. Irish-Baker played in 68 games over three seasons with Cincinnati and collected nine goals and seven assists for 16 points and 47 penalty minutes. Cyclones goaltender Loic Lacasse has been placed on the injured reserve list. Former Cyclone defenseman Conrad Martin has re-signed with the team and will skate with the club Tuesday.

MILLER LITE CYCLONES COACHES SHOW: The Miller Lite Cyclones Coaches Show will be held tonight from 7-8pm at Jefferson Hall at Newport on the Levee. Head Coach Chuck Weber and a pair of players are usually on hand each week. Tonight, Assistant Coach Dean Stork will be pinch-hitting with Ben Gordon and Mark Van Guilder joining as the guests.

MAX FM CARRIES THE GAMES: The Cyclones will have 30 games carried on MAX-FM (97.7 and 99.5) this season. The next broadcast will come from Elmira next Friday, November 14.
