Devils Drop Two To Bombers At Home

November 10, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Trenton Devils News Release

TRENTON, NJ -- The Trenton Devils were swept over the weekend by the Dayton Bombers at home, losing 4-3 on Friday and 5-1 on Saturday. The Bombers scored three goals late in the third period to steal a win from the Devils on Friday, and then continued to dominate the following night as most of Saturday's action took place in the Devils zone. Trenton will try to re-group on the road with tilts against Johnstown and Reading coming up this weekend.

BOMBERS COME BACK TO BEAT DEVILS: The Trenton Devils let a third period, two-goal lead go to waste as they were knocked off by the Dayton Bombers Friday night, 4-3. Eric Castonguay put the Devils on the board late in the first with a power play goal, his fourth tally of the season. Nathan Schwartzbauer then tied the game midway through the second with a wrap-around goal. The Devils would come out storming at the beginning of the third period, resulting in a point-blank goal by Jim Henkel 1:31 into the period, his first goal of the season. Trenton then capitalized on the power play as Tyler Burton knocked home his third of the season to make it 3-1 with 14:02 remaining. The Devils appeared to be in control until Mike McLean capitalized on a Devil turnover in front Jason Smith and made a highlight-reel move to beat Smith and pull Dayton within a goal with 7:19 to go. McLean then tied the game up with 2:57 left when his deflection off Dominic D'Amour's slap shot found its way into the net. After Dan McGoff took a delay of game penalty with less than two minutes to go, it took seven seconds for Justin Bowers to get the deciding tally on the man advantage and seal Trenton's fate with 1:36 left. Trenton's power play went 2-for-4 in the contest, while Henkel added an assist to have his first multi-point game of the season.

DAYTON DOMINATES DEVILS: Less than 24 hours after their comeback win, the Bombers continued to frustrate the Devils as Dayton would go on to win Saturday night, 5-1. Nino Musitelli scored 8:28 into the contest to put the Bombers on the board, and Greg Labenski quickly followed up with a goal 46 seconds later to make it 2-0. Jarret Lukin and Musitelli put two more pucks into the net during the second period to give the Bombers a four-goal lead after 40 minutes of play. Musitelli completed his hat trick 57 seconds into the third period to finish up Dayton's scoring. Eric Castonguay scored the only goal for the Devils with 8:43 left in regulation. Trenton's power play went 0-for-3, marking the first time this season that the Devils did not score with the man advantage.

COUNT ON CASTONGUAY: Devils forward Eric Castonguay extended his point-scoring streak to nine games over the weekend with a goal in each contest. Castonguay, who last week was a runner-up for ECHL Player of the Week, has 14 points in 10 games for Trenton.

BET ON BRETT: Since joining the Devils at the end of October from the Elmira Jackals, Brett Pilkington has proven to be a solid playmaker, with an assist in every game he's played for Trenton. Pilkington has seven assists in five games for the Devils.

QUICK HITS: Goaltender Jeff Frazee was assigned to Lowell (AHL) last Monday after being recalled by New Jersey (NHL) for emergency purposes; Frazee was 2-2-0-0 in five starts for Trenton...Devils forward Thomas Harrison was loaned to Lowell Saturday and made his AHL debut later that night; Harrison fought Bridgeport enforcer Mitch Fritz in the first period of Lowell's 5-4 loss...Forwards Mark O'Leary and Dan Eves each joined Trenton during the week in separate trades.
