Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
CINCINNATI - The Cincinnati Cyclones closed out the home portion of the 2007-08 regular season with a 4-2 win over Elmira. Barret Ehgoetz and Olivier Latendresse picked up a pair of assists in the win for Cincinnati-which won its 29th home game in 36 tries.
A club record 9615 fans packed U.S. Bank Arena for the contest. It was the 14th time this season that an ECHL game had more than nine thousand fans attend. The total eclipsed the previous record of 7584, from November 29, 2002 when Dayton visited.
The Cyclones became just the second Cincinnati professional hockey team to win at least 52 games in the regular season. The other was the 1972-73 Cincinnati Swords (AHL) team that won 54 games and captured the Calder Cup championship.
The Cyclones concluded their home portion of the regular season with a 29-4-3 record, including a 23-1-2 mark after November 26.
The Cyclones raced out to a 2-0 first period lead. Rookie Chris Ferazzoli scored his first ECHL goal at 14:24, re-directing a pass from the right side of the net. Barret Ehgoetz and Ryan Russell handed out the assists on the score. A little more than a minute later, at 15:43, Jason Deitsch camped in the same spot and fired home his twelfth goal of the campaign from Olivier Latendresse and Kyle Bushee. Elmira outshot the Cyclones, 10-9, in the period.
Elmira scored a delayed penalty goal just 52 seconds into the second period-to cut the deficit to one, 2-1. Luke Fritshaw collected his second lamplighter of the season from Bobby Robins and Matt Gens. Fritshaw teed up his shot from the right point and beat Cycl;ones netminder Cody Rudkowsky over the right shoulder. Cincinnati re-established the two goal lead when Mathieu Aubin extended his point streak to eight games by collecting his 25th goal at 7:58 from Ehgoetz and Latendresse. The Cyclones outshot Elmira, 17-10, in the period.
Elmira closed the deficit to one at 8:59 of the final frame when Benoit Doucet netted his 29th goal. An empty net goal from David Desharnais with 38 seconds, his 27th of the season, closed out the scoring. Jason Deitsch had the assist.
Cody Rudkowsky stopped 33 shots in running his record with the Cyclones to 5-0-2. Barret Ehgoetz was selected as the game's number one star with two assists in his 200th pro hockey game.
The Cincinnati Cyclones are 41 games above .500, with a 52-10-5 record and sole possession of first place in the North Division-26 points ahead of second place Elmira. The win gives Cincinnati a 36-4-3 record since December 15. Elmira is 38-22-7. The 52 wins are the most ever by the club.
The club heads to Johnstown for a 7pm game against the Chiefs on Saturday night. The game will be carried on 96 Rock, as well as through the internet at: www.cycloneshockey.com.
By winning the North Division, the Cyclones have a bye in the play-in round of the ECHL postseason and will host the winner of the fourth seed-fifth seed, best-of-three series at the end of the regular season. The first game of the best-of-seven series that the Cyclones will play, opens at U.S. Bank Arena on Friday, April 11 at 7:30pm. The second contest (Game âB' will be played the next night-Saturday, April 12).
