Lynx top Inferno in one final battle, 3-2
March 28, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release
Without their Head Coach Bob Ferguson on the bench for a second straight game, the Lynx squeezed out another close win on Friday night defeating the Columbia Inferno, 3-2. #20 Matt Auffrey had two goals, while #7 Travis Fuller added the other. The Lynx started out strong, outshooting the Inferno early 10-1, which was culminated with Auffrey's first goal of the night, which was a beautiful coast-to-coast play as Auffrey deked his way around the Inferno defense and slid one underneath goaltender Todd Ford. In the 2nd period, the Inferno answered back with a goal from Dan Sparre, who walked in alone on Lynx goaltender #30 Bobby Goepfert and beat him to the low blocker side.
The Inferno took their first lead of the game early in the 3rd period thanks to a power play goal from former Lynx defenseman Eric Lundberg, who fired a slapshot that beat a screened Goepfert to make it 2-1 Columbia. However, the Lynx were given a jolt thanks to a double minor penalty on the Inferno's AJ Bozoian, which led to two straight Lynx power play goals. The first came off the stick of Travis Fuller, who swooped in to pick up a loose rebound after a shot from #11 Matt Christie and more help to #25 Adrian Veideman, who rushed the puck into the zone. Less than two minutes later, Auffrey scored his second of the night and 25th of the season with a wrist shot from the circle that beat a screened Ford for the eventual game-winner sending the 3,323 fans at the James Brown Arena into a roar. The Lynx, led by Goepfert's 25 saves, shut the door the rest of the way for their second consecutive win and 4th win in their last five games. The Lynx return to home ice tomorrow, March 29th against the Mississippi Sea Wolves at 7:05pm.
