March 28, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Mississippi Sea Wolves News Release
BILOXI, MS - A long-side shot by Ryan Menei on a give-and-go with Mark Rooneem gave the Mississippi Sea Wolves a 1-0 lead less than eight minutes into the game, but it was the South Carolina Stingrays who owned the final 52 minutes of the game as they scored six unanswered goals to defeat Mississippi by the score of 6-1 at the North Charleston Coliseum on Friday night.
Breaking in two-on-one on a odd-man rush, Menei passed to Rooneem, who then gave the puck back to Menei, and the rookie forward fired it past South Carolina goalie Josh Johnson to give Mississippi a 1-0 lead at the 7:11 mark of the first period. South Carolina would even the score at one-apiece when Matt Smith took a pass from Chris Chaput and beat Mississippi's Morgan Cey high to the stick side on the power play at 12:04 of the first period.
South Carolina took a 2-1 lead when referee David Jones ruled that a shot by South Carolina's Ben Nelson crossed the goal line as the net was knocked off the moorings at the 16:37 mark of the second period. Travis Morin would stake the Stingrays to a 3-1 lead when Rory Rawlyk found him open in the low slot from behind the goal line and he put the puck past Cey on the blocker side at 19:50 of the second frame.
The Stingrays would continue to roll through the third period, with Matt Smith adding his second of the game at 5:37, Matt Scherer picking up his 11th goal of the season at 7:01, and Todd Griffith breaking in on Cey and tucking the puck past him on the stick side at the 15:00 mark.
The Sea Wolves were 0-for-6 on the power play, and Morgan Cey made 25 saves taking the loss. John Hallas made one save in five minutes of relief work.
The Sea Wolves are back in action tomorrow night at the James Brown Arena against the Augusta Lynx. The game will be heard on 1640-AM WTNI with pre-game coverage beginning at 5:35. Fan Appreciation Night is April 4 when the Sea Wolves take on the Pensacola Ice Pilots at 7:05 p.m. Get your tickets today by calling 228.275.WOLF!
