The first twenty minutes brought a four goal advantage to the Wildcatters mostly from the work of forward, Kevin Baker who netted a hat-trick. Baker would star the scoring firing a shot that beat Checkers netminder, Mike Ayers at 5:23. Later, it was a backhander from close range by Dan Welch that snuck between the legs of Ayers that put Texas up, 2-0. Baker netted his second of the game on the power play with a rising shot from that flew over the blocker of Ayers at 14:17. Baker would register another power play goal completing the trick by scoring one more on Ayers at 16:51 putting the Wildcatters up 4-0 after one period and signaling the end of the night for Ayers as Chris Holt stepped into replace him.
