Williamsport Crosscutters News Release
The Williamsport Crosscutters picked up their seventh straight win on Wednesday night at Susquehanna Bank Park against State College. The Cutters have swept a three game series twice this season from the Spikes. The magic number for clinching the division sits at five after the 8-4 win. Williamsport pushes closer to post season play while improving to 25-10 at home this season and 29-11 against divisional opponents.
The Crosscutters for the second straight night found themselves behind the eight ball as State College plated two runs in the top of the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. Jose Taveras would settle in from the third inning on to get back into form. Jose Pujols continued to terrorize the Spikes and starter Jorge Rodriguez as he hit pay dirt with a solo home run to cut the deficit to 2-1. Four batters later Austin Bossart hit his first triple of the season to tie the game 2-2.
Williamsport charged ahead to take a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third inning as Pujols drove in his second run of the night. Brendon Hayden and Carlos Duran would follow suit with a pair of RBI hits to pad the lead and make it 5-2. Taveras allowed his first home run of the season in the top of the sixth inning to Casey Grayson making it 5-3. That would turn out to be the only blemish on the night as Taveras turned in six solid innings for Williamsport.
The Cutters would run into some trouble defensively in the top of the seventh inning as State College loaded the bases with nobody out against left hander Denton Keys. Keys would look to his defense for some help to get out of the inning and would receive it in the form of 4-3 inning ending double play. The Cutters would add three runs in the home half of the inning on RBI doubles from Hayden and Duran to make it 8-3.
