August 26, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release
In a game that featured 10 combined runs in one inning, the Scrappers (28-34) fell to the Doubledays (28-34) 9-8 on Wednesday night at Falcon Park.
With a Williamsport win and Mahoning Valley loss, the Scrappers are officially eliminated from the playoffs.
Auburn struck first in the bottom of the first. Rhett Wiseman singled to score Victor Robles to give the Doubledays a 1-0 lead after one.
Things got crazy in the second inning.
The Scrappers brought five runs to the plate. Juan De La Cruz reached on an error by Anderson Franco. Franco committed three errors in the top of the second. Max Schrock also committed an error, and the Doubledays combined to make four errors in that half inning. Nate Winfrey scored on Willi Castro reaching on a Franco error. The next batter, Jodd Carter, reached on an error by Franco. That scored Connor Marabell.
Ka'ai Tom ripped a double to right to score Alexis Pantoja, Castro, and Carter.
The Doubledays responded with five runs of their own in the bottom of the second.
Diomedes Eusebio scored on an error by Castro. Victor Robles was hit by a pitch for the second time, and that cleared the benches and bullpens. Jose Matamoros and Greg Roemer, the two umpires, had control of the exchange, and both sides returned back to the dugout and bullpen after about one minute.
The next batter was Schrock. He reached on Winfrey error, and that scored Melvin Rodriguez.
Jorge Tillero scored on a wild pitch from Kieran Lovegrove (1-6), and Robles later scored on a Kelvin Gutierrez ground out.
The Doubledays and Scrappers combined to score 10 runs in the second inning.
Mahoning Valley inched back the best it could. The Scrappers scored two in the fourth and one in the sixth, but came up short. Gabriel Mejia pinch ran for De La Cruz in the ninth and he was the tying run at third when Pantoja struck out looking to end the game.
The Doubledays now hold a 4-2 season series lead with the Scrappers, who head to West Virginia to take on the Black Bears.
Leandro Linares gets the ball for Mahoning Valley against J.T. Brubaker for West Virginia. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 in Morgantown.
