Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release

TROY, NY-The Connecticut Tigers (29-31) salvaged the final game of a three game series with the Tri-City ValleyCats (35-28) by winning 3-1 on Wednesday night. It snapped a three game losing streak for the Tigers.

Trailing 1-0 in the top of the sixth the Tigers got a power boost from an unlikely source as second basemen Pat Mackenzie (2-4, HR) launched his first professional home run to tie the game. Mackenzie hit the home run off ValleyCat reliever Scott Weathersby.

The following inning Connecticut took the lead as they faced Yeyfry Del Rosario (3-3). With one out catcher Shane Zeile (2-4, R) doubled and came around to score on an RBI single by shortstop Keaton Jones making it 2-1.

Connecticut added another run in the eighth on an RBI fielder's choice by centerfielder Joey Havrilak that scored designated hitter Cam Gibson (2-4).

Sandy Baez was brilliant once again as he gave up just one run in five innings of work on one hit. He struck out four and walked two. He has now allowed just two earned runs in his last 23 innings of work. Jordan Smith (2-1) got the win as he pitched three very good innings of one hit baseball. Jake Shull (SV 7) closed things out in the ninth getting the side in order after allowing a leadoff hit.

Trent Thornton started the game for Tri-City and went three innings without allowing a run on three hits. On this night it was the bullpen that struggled. Weathersby allowed a run in his two and a third innings and it was Del Rosario taking the loss. Del Rosario gave up two runs in just an inning and two thirds. He surrendered four hits in his brief stint on the mound.

Connecticut will play the first game of a three game series at home against Lowell on Thursday. The first pitch tomorrow is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
