Auburn Doubledays News Release
AUBURN, NY - The Auburn Doubledays defeated the Mahoning Valley Scrappers 9-8 on Wednesday night in a slugfest that saw the two teams record more hits and runs than either of the first two games of the series.
The Doubledays struck first in the bottom of the first inning. Victor Robles led off with a hit by pitch and advanced to third on a single by Kelvin Gutierrez. The outfielder than walked in from third on an RBI single by Rhett Wiseman that also extended his hit streak to 12.
Both teams then broke out the bats in a wild second inning. Both teams scored five runs with only one of the 10 total runs in the second being earned. The Scrappers scored five runs on two hits and four errors while the Doubledays scored five runs on five hits and two errors. After two, the Doubledays led 6-5.
An inning later in the third, the Doubledays added three more. With one out, Darryl Florentino and Melvin Rodriguez both drew walks. Jorge Tillero knocked in Florentino with a double before Robles walked to load the bases. Max Schrock then drove in Rodriguez before Gutierrez knocked in Tillero and Robles to give the Doubledays an 8-5 lead.
The Scrappers responded quickly in the fourth thanks to doubles by Ka'ai Tom and Nate Winfrey to put the score at 9-7 after three and a half. That's when the scoring slowed down.
The next run to score was in the sixth inning. Jodd Carter led off with a single and advanced to third on Gabriel Mejia's single to center. That brought up Winfrey who drove in Carter with a single into left to put the score at 9-8.
After the sixth, both offenses quieted and the score remained at 9-8 until the end of the game.
