Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
Brooklyn, NY (8/26/15)- The Hudson Valley Renegades defeated the Brooklyn Cyclones by a score of 4-0 on Wednesday evening at MCU Park. With the victory, the Renegades saw their record improve to 32-31 while Brooklyn fell to 30-33.
After four scoreless innings of play, the Renegades brought home four runs in the top of the fifth inning. Shortstop Michael Russell led off the inning with a walk and stole second base. He came home on RBI double from center fielder Angel Moreno, who later came home on a RBI double from right fielder Manny Sanchez.
With two outs in the fifth inning, third baseman Alex Schmidt drove in Sanchez on a RBI triple to the right center field gap to give the Renegades a 3-0 lead. The next batter was left fielder Jose Paez and he brought home Schmidt on a RBI single, giving Hudson Valley a 4-0 advantage.
Four runs was enough support for Hudson Valley's starting pitcher Cameron Varga (3-5) as he tossed five shut out innings in the win and struck out six batters while scattering three hits.
Brooklyn were held in check throughout the night as they picked up just five hits but the Cyclones had an opportunity with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning and runners on the corners. But Renegades relief pitcher John Williams induced left fielder Hengelbert Rojas into an inning-ending double play to preserve the 4-0 lead.
Williams and Reece Karalus each pitched two scoreless innings to give the Renegades their third shutout win of the season. Brooklyn's starting pitcher Gaby Almonte (6-6) took the loss as he allowed four runs off ten hits in six innings of work.
Notes: With Angel Moreno's two-for-five effort on Wednesday night, he now has 13 multi-hit games on the 2015 season. That mark is good for the second highest on the team as he only trails Jake Cronenworth's mark of 18 multi-hit games this season. Moreno has been hitting the ball well lately as he has hit safely in eight of his last ten games played and five of those efforts were multi-hit nights.
The Renegades return to Wappingers Falls to host the Staten Island Yankees on Thursday, August 26th at 7:05pm with Thursday night being "Augtoberfest Night" at Dutchess Stadium. Call 845-838-0094, or visit www.hvrenegades.com to purchase your tickets now.
