August 26, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
LOWELL, MA --- Tate Matheny snapped a 3-3 tie with a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Lowell Spinners completed a three-game sweep of the Vermont Lake Monsters with an 8-4 victory on Wednesday night in New York-Penn League action at LeLecheur Park.
The Spinners had taken a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third on a Josh Ockimey three-run homer, but Vermont tied the game with two runs in the fifth inning on a Trace Loehr RBI groundout and a run-scoring wild pitch. Lowell loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth on a walk, single and walk to knock Lake Monsters reliever Chris Kohler from the game before Matheny, the son of St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny, greeted Evan Manarino with the two-run single to left to give the Spinners the lead.
Vermont got a run back in the seventh inning when Richie Martin reached on a one-out error and scored on a two-out Seth Brown RBI double, but Vermont got that run back in the bottom of the seventh on a Victor Acosta RBI groundout and added two more runs in the eighth inning for the four-run lead. With the three-game sweep, its second against the Lake Monsters this season, the Spinners now 8-1 against Vermont in nine games played (Lake Monsters finish season with three games at Lowell September 5-7).
Spinners reliever Daniel Gonzalez (3-2) allowed one unearned run on five hits with one walk and three strikeouts over the final 4 1/3 innings to earn the win, while Tyler Spoon was 2-for-4 with two runs and Ockimey scored twice for Lowell (33-31). Steve Pallares was 3-for-4 with a walk, run scored and a double for the Lake Monsters, while Martin was 2-for-5 with two runs and Trace Loehr was 1-for-4 with 2 RBI. Vermont (26-36) has now lost eight of its last nine games to fall 10 games under .500 for first time this season.
The Lake Monsters return home to historic Centennial Field for a three-game series against the Stedler Division-leading Tri-City ValleyCats starting on Thursday at 7:05 pm. The first 500 fans through the gates at 6:00 pm will receive a free mini-bat courtesy of Jiffy Mart, while the first 400 kids will receive a voucher for a free hot dog, bag of chips and soft drink as part of "Kids Eat Free Thursday" courtest of Heritage Automotive.
