Yanks Split Doubleheader with IronBirds Again

Game 1
After splitting Tuesday's doubleheader with the Aberdeen IronBirds (32 -32), the Staten Island Yankees (33-10) cruised to an easy 7-1 victory in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader.
New York-Penn League all-star Junior Valera got the offense going with a stand-up triple in the second inning, scoring during the next at bat with red hot Trey Amburgey hitting a sacrifice fly to right field.
Aberdeen tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Steve Laurino doubled then scored on a Randolph Gassaway single to right field, making the score 1-1.
The Baby Bombers took control of the game in the fifth inning. Daniel Ayers (L, 1-1) came on in relief for the IronBirds and struggled big time. Eduardo de Oleo and Kyle Holder collected back-to-back singles before Jeff Hendrix laid down a bunt that was thrown into the outfield by Ayers, allowing de Oleo to score. With Holder and Hendrix both in scoring position, the IronBirds opted to intentionally walk Amburgey to load the bases. With Ryan Krill at the plate, Ayers threw two wild pitches, bringing home Holder and Hendrix. Ryan Krill would eventually draw a walk as Zach Zehner followed with a single to score Amburgey. Drew Bridges capped off the scoring in the inning, hitting a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home Krill for a 6-1 lead.
Staten Island added one more run in the sixth inning for good measure. Holder reached on a fielding error by Aberdeen shortstop Ryan Mountcastle then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Valera and Amburgey collected back-to-back singles, bringing home Holder to give the Yankees a 7-1 victory.
Derek Callahan (W, 5-3) earned the win for Staten Island, going 5.1 innings with six strikeouts.
Game 2
Like déjà vu, Staten Island fell in game two of the Wednesday's doubleheader to Aberdeen, 2-1.
Aberdeen claimed the lead and never looked back in the first frame. Cedric Mullins and Drew Turbin collected back-to-back singles then Staten Island starter Matt Borens (L, 1-4) plunked Gassaway to load the bases. Alex Murphy took advantage of the situation, singling to center to bring home the only two runs the IronBirds needed.
The silver lining for Staten Island came in the bottom of fourth inning as Amburgey hit his third homer of the season and his second in as many days.
Staten Island travels to Hudson Valley Thursday before returning to Staten Island Friday night for Irish Heritage Night. The first 2,500 fans in the ballpark get a free Staten Island Yankees shamrock hat, sponsored by Richmond County Savings Bank.
