Break out the Brooms: West Virginia Sweeps Batavia with 4-2 Win
August 26, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
West Virginia Black Bears News Release
The West Virginia Black Bears completed the sweep of the Batavia Muckdogs with a 4-2 win on Wednesday night at Monongalia County Ballpark. With the win, the Black Bears improve to 34-30 this season while Batavia falls to 25-38 overall. The Black Bears now move into first place in the Wild Card standings, maintaining a 0.5 game lead over State College Spikes.
The Muckdogs jumped on the Black Bears early in the game. After a one out walk in the first inning, Brad Haynal delivered an RBI double to give Batavia a 1-0 lead. The teams were scoreless until the fourth inning when West Virginia evened the score.
After 3B Ke'Bryan Hayes reached second on a fielding error, he came around the score on an RBI single ripped right by 1B Albert Baur to knot the score at 1-1. The Black Bears added on some insurance runs in the fifth inning to extend their lead. SS Erik Forgione led the inning off by reaching first on a catcher's interference call. After Forgione was sacrificed to second, he scored when C Christian Kelley singled up the middle to give West Virginia a 2-1 lead. RF Logan Hill then stepped to the plate and launched a triple off the right field wall and then scored from third on a botched exchange on the relay throw to put the Black Bears up 4-1.
Batavia added on a run in the eighth inning but that was all the scoring they would get to allow the Black Bears to hang on to the lead.
In his debut with the Black Bears, Hayes finished 0-4 at the plate but reached base safely in the fourth inning on a fielding error. SP Seth McGarry tossed 3.2 innings, earning the no decision, while RP Cesilio Pimentel relived him and earned the win (2-2) while pitching 3.1 scoreless innings and improving his team-leading strikeout total to 55. RP Daniel Zamora pitched the final two innings to slam the door, earning his second save of the season.
The Black Bears will now begin a three-game series with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers beginning Thursday, August 27 with all games having a first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
