Auburn Doubledays News Release
Tonight's Game: The Doubledays host the Mahoning Valley Scrappers for the rubber match of the three-game series between the Doubledays and Scrappers. Auburn is 7-1 in rubber matches this year and sends Grant Borne to the hill to face Kieran Lovegrove for Mahoning Valley.
Last Night's Game: The Doubledays fell to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers 3-0 in game two of the series last night. The two teams were scoreless entering the ninth inning. After eight, the Doubledays had one runner reach third while the Scrappers hadn't gotten anyone to third. With two outs, the Scrappers ended up loading the bases on a single with an error, intentional walk, and walk respectively. Connor Marabell then dug in and cleared the bases with a triple to give the Scrappers a 3-0 lead they wouldn't give up.
The Wild Card Chase: With 13 games left in the season, the Doubledays sit 5.5 games back in the wild card race. State College currently leads the wild card chase with the following teams behind them: West Virginia 0.5 GB, Lowell 1.5 GB, Hudson Valley 2.0 GB, Aberdeen 2.0 GB, Brooklyn 3.0 GB, Connecticut 3.5 GB, Mahoning Valley 4.5 GB, Auburn 5.5 GB, Vermont 6.5 GB, and Batavia 8.0 GB.
Bullpen Domination: Auburn's 'pen has been dominant over the course of the season recording a 3.26 ERA (100 ER in 276.0 IP). The starting pitchers haven't been as fortunate recording a 5.01 ERA (138 ER in 248.1 IP). Also of note, the Doubledays have surrendered 131 runs in the first three innings combined (45, 36, and 50 in the first through third respectively). Those 131 runs account for exactly 44% of the runs Auburn's pitching staff has given up this year (297 total).
This Dude is On Fire: Since not playing from July 25th until August 6th, Max Schrock has played in 16 games. In his first game back, the infielder went 0-1 on August 6th. In the 15 games since, he has raised his batting average from .246 to .307 and has a hit in 13 of 15, including an 11-game hit streak in the middle. He is on a three-game hit streak going 2-4, 2-5, and 2-4 in those three respectively since ending his 11- game hit streak.
These Cleats Aren't Made For Walking: Over their last nine games, the Doubledays have drawn just 10 walks, including none in three of nine games. This season, Auburn as a whole has drawn 171 walks, which is second fewest in the New York-Penn League. Aberdeen has the fewest with just 150. Meanwhile, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers have given up the most. The Scrappers' pitching staff has surrendered 248 walks, eight more than Lowell's 243, which is second most in the league.
Struggling In the Third: In three starts this year, Grant Borne's biggest issue has come in the third inning. Across his three starts, Borne has given up a total of 10 runs (7 earned and 3 unearned) in the third inning. In total, Borne has given up a total of 12 runs (9 earned) and 10 of those have come in the third inning alone. In his last start on August 21st, Borne gave up three runs on four hits in the third, but retired all 12 hitters he faced in the first, second, fourth, and fifth innings.
