Staten Island Yankees News Release

Game 1

Finishing a postponed game that was rained out at Aberdeen, the Staten Island Yankees (32-29) took down the Aberdeen IronBirds in the first game of a doubleheader on Tuesday, 4-1.

On August 19, the Yankees jumped out to a two-run lead in the first inning. Jeff Hendrix and Zack Zehner drew walks followed by a Thairo Estrada double to left that scored Hendrix. Kevin Cornelius drew a walk to load the bases then Brandon Wagner and Trey Amburgey fell victim to strikeouts before Ryan Krill drew a bases loaded walk for a 2-0 lead.

The IronBirds were able to scratch across their only run of the contest in their home ballpark before the game was finished in Staten Island. Cedric Mullins singled on a bunt then advanced to second on a fielder's choice. A wild pitch by Staten Island starter Kolton Mahoney (W, 2-2) allowed Mullins to reach third before scoring on a single by D.J. Stewart to make the score 2-1 heading to Richmond County Bank Ballpark.

The Baby Bombers immediately took advantage of being back at home when the game resumed on Tuesday. In the second inning, Drew Bridges singled to right field to get the bats going. Hendrix and Zehner drew back-to-back walks to load the bases, bringing up Estrada who grounded into a double play, bringing home Bridges.

Staten Island added one more run for good measure in sixth inning as Trey Amburgey hit his first home run as a member of the Baby Bombers making the score 4-1 in favor of the Yankees.

Game 2

Staten Island looked primed to sweep the doubleheader, grabbing the lead in the first inning. Estrada reached on an error by Aberdeen second baseman Drew Turbin to begin the game for the Yankees. Amburgey and Cornelius collected back-to-back singles, plating Estrada for a 1-0 lead.

Staten Island pitching, led by starter Ethan Carnes, held strong until the fourth inning. Turbin singled to left field then Stewart was hit by a pitch. Next up was Randolph Gassaway, who singled to load the bases. Oswill Lartiguez brought home the tying run, tapping a ball in front of home plate, allowing Turbin to score.

With James Reeves (L, 1-1) on in relief, the IronBirds took control in the sixth inning. Gassaway and Steve Laurino both singled, putting runners on the corners for Lartiguez who brought home another run via a sacrifice fly to center field, giving Aberdeen a 2-1 victory.

The two teams conclude their season series on Wednesday with another doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
