Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Countdown to Face-off Kalamazoo Wings Vs Port Huron Beacons Wings Stadium Kalamazoo, MI Friday, March 28, 2003 7:30 PM
Game Preview For the final time in the 2002-2003 season the K-Wings will play home at Wings Stadium, as they host the Port Huron Beacons. For Kalamazoo it's all about pride, as the K-Wings have been eliminated from the upcoming UHL playoffs. Port Huron enters Wings Stadium knowing that they will meet the Fort Wayne Komets in the first round of the Colonial Cup Playoffs, however, the Beacons will be looking to win their next two games to give them momentum for their upcoming playoff series. Following tonight's game, fans and media are encouraged to stay and witness the K-Wings Annual Team Awards Ceremony.
The K-Wings are led by Peter Roed and Chad Alban. Roed leads all K-Wings scorers with 56 points, while Alban has been stellar between the pipes for the K-Wings. Alban has made 37 straight appearances, including 36 straight starts. Chad has a goals against average of 3.40 and a save percentage of .896, to go along with his record of 21-25-5.
The Beacons are led by Jason Firth and Kory Cooper. Firth needs just 4 points to reach the 100-point plateau for the season. If Firth is able to reach the feat, it will mark the 8th time in his 10-year career he has been able to score 100 points in a season. Cooper has a goals against average of 3.21 and a save percentage .908 combined with his record of 25-17-7.
Trew Nears Milestone With his next shift, K-Wings forward Jordan Trew will reach a milestone. Trew is just one game shy of 100 of his career.
Vilneff Closes in on 600 K-Wings Defenseman Mark Vilneff is closing in on a personal milestone. Entering tonight, Mark has played 598 games professionally. Vilneff needs only 2 more games to reach 600. To reach the feat, Mark will have to play in two of the K-Wings remaining three games. O' Leary Streak Reaches Four K-Wing forward Patrick O' Leary starts the week on a point streak. O'Leary has recorded 2 goals and has added 3 assists in his last four games
The Obscure Stat of the Week There have been 9 penalty shots in the UHL this year, however only one player has scored. K-Wing Tyson Turgeon's penalty shot goal against Fort Wayne on February 19th has been the only penalty shot scored this season. In fact, the last penalty shot that was scored in the league was scored by New Haven's Doug Sheppard as he scored on B.C's Erasmo Saltarelli in a game back on 11/23/2001, a span of 13 penalty shots.
Team Awards Ceremony Following tonight's game, the K-Wings will be having their team Awards Ceremony. The ceremony will take place at center ice right after tonight's game.
