San Diego and Idaho Clash Again At B of A Centre
March 28, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release
BOISE, Idaho -- The San Diego Gulls look to tighten their second-place lead, while the Idaho Steelheads look to close in on more league records tonight when the two meet again at the Bank of America Centre.
San Diego suffered a tough shootout loss to Idaho on Tuesday, but still gained ground on the Bakersfield Condors. The Gulls lead Bakersfield by two points for second place and home-ice advantage in the first round of the Taylor Cup Playoffs. The Condors, who've played one more game than San Diego, host the Anchorage Aces tonight.
Mark Pederson has been officially lost for the remainder of the regular season after being put on the 14-day injured list today. San Diego's leading scorer racked up 72 points, fifth in the West Coast Hockey League, and 39 goals, second in the league. The 35-year-old veteran suffered a groin injury March 14 in Anchorage.
Kevin Grant, however, will be back in the lineup after being activated from IR today. In 31 games this season, the veteran defenseman has scored 24 points (5g, 19a) and amassed 62 penalty minutes. The Gulls are 24-6-1 with Grant in the lineup.
The Steelheads won their 50th game of the season Tuesday night, making them only the fifth team in WCHL history to do so. Idaho now needs four wins in its final five games to set the all-time season record. The Steelheads need eight more points for 112, which would break the 111 mark the Tacoma Sabercats notched in 1999-00. Idaho has already set the record for most home wins, which is now 31 and counting.
One of Idaho's top guns, Marty Flichel, has been activated from the injured list and should play tonight. In 56 games this season, he has 63 points, 10th in the WCHL, and 32 goals, third in the league. Flichel has been sidelined since March 1.
With Flichel back in the lineup, Idaho's already top power play should be even better. Coming into tonight, the Steelheads lead the WCHL with a 24 percent power play efficiency. They also average 3.79 goals a game, tops in the league.
The Gulls and Steelheads have met 12 times this season with Idaho holding a 7-4-1 series edge. The last four games at the Bank of America Centre have gone to shootouts. The two will meet for the final time in regular season tomorrow.
Tonight's game will broadcast live on AM1360-KPOP, rather than its usual station (AM1130-KSDO). The Gulls' Internet radio show broadcasts live every Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on wsradio.com with Tera Black and Jeremy Zager hosting.
