Greensboro Generals News Release

GREENSBORO, NC— A Greensboro Generals 4-3 victory over the arch-rival Charlotte Checkers gave the franchise two unique firsts. For the first time in team history the Generals (40-21-9) will make the Kelly Cup playoffs. A crowd of 6,620 also witnessed Greensboro capture the Carolina Cup, an award given between the two teams for the team that won the most head-to-head matchups throughout the season, for the first time in franchise history.

Greensboro jumped out to an early lead when Geno Parrish scored at the 3:09 mark of the first. The Generals Matt Chandler sent a shot to the top right shelf past netminder Colin Zulianello to send the Generals up 2-0, closing out the opening period.

The Checkers (41-27-3) retaliated with three consecutive goals in the second period, putting Greensboro on its heels defensively. The first two goal came off the stick of Kevin Caulfield who scored less than two minutes apart, and at that point knotted the game 2-2. A goal by David Evans put the Checkers into the lead with a 3-2 advantage at the 12:41 mark. Greensboro's David Whitworth tied the game with just 29 seconds remaining in the second, setting up a critical third period.

With a two-on-one odd man rush, Greensboro Captian Jay Murphy converted a pass from Mike Bayrack to the short side post giving Greensboro a 4-3 advantage that it would not relinquish. The victory gave the Generals franchise its first ever Carolina Cup, and put a stamp on the Generals run to the Kelly Cup playoffs. The victory also tied Generals netminder Daniel Berthiaume's career best with 30 wins for the season.

The Generals continue their homestand on Saturday when facing the Lexington Men O' War at the Greensboro Coliseum with a 7:30 start time. The first 1,000 kids will receive a Hanes boxer shorts. Fans can check all the Generals action on WPET 950AM and www.greensborogenerals.com.
