Idaho Steelheads News Release

BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads, who have been almost unstoppable at home this season, dropped their third decision at the Bank of America Centre, 3-1 to the San Diego Gulls tonight. The game featured physical play early, but neither team was able to sustain that pace the entire 60 minutes.

Trevor Koenig's stellar performance in net for San Diego made the difference as the Steelheads outshot the Gulls 29-23. San Diego was 1-5 on the power play, while Idaho was 0-3.

Sylvain Deschatelets put the first puck in the net at 13:45. Dennis Purdie saw Idaho's netminder Jason Cugnet out of position and got a pass over to Deschatelets who had a wide-open net. Cory Cyrenne gave the Gulls a 2-0 lead at 18:32 when he beat Cugnet low, stick side.

The Gulls started the second period on the power play but couldn't capitalize. Idaho was the next to score when Marty Flichel faked a shot and as Koenig came out to make the save Flichel got a pass over to Joe Rybar who was waiting to tap it in. The goal came at 4:32. San Diego regained their two-goal lead at 15:33 when Samy Nasreddine knocked one between the pipes.

The Steelheads made a push with 1:37 left in the third and pulled Cugnet out of the net to add the attacker. However, the period ended with no scoring.

The Idaho Steelheads conclude their record-setting home season Saturday night against the San Diego Gulls. The West Coast Hockey League's Founder's Cup will be presented to the Steelheads for finishing the regular season in first place (for the second consecutive year).
