Fort Wayne Komets News Release
Fort Wayne, IN --- The Komets have become the 7th team in the history of the UHL to win the Tarry Cup which is annually awarded to the team that finishes the regular season with the best overall record as determined by points earned in the standings.
The Komets secured the 2002-03 UHL regular season title with their 43rd win of the season over the Generals at Flint tonight, 4-1, giving the Fort Wayne UHL team a 43-21-10 record and 96 points with 2 games remaining in the 2002-03 regular season campaign. Quad City was on the heels of the Komets in the race for the Tarry Cup. The Mallards, with a record of 40-23-10 and 90 points with 3 games remaining going into tonight's schedule would lose the head-to-head series tie-breaker (providing the teams ended the season tied with points and wins). Quad City has won the regular season title on 4 occasions and has taken the Tarry Cup the past 3 straight seasons.
The regular season championship award was first presented in 1991-92, but took the name "Tarry Cup" in 1994 in memory of the late Doug Tarry, owner of the St. Thomas Wildcats, a charter member of the league. The Michigan Falcons became the first winner of the Tarry Cup in 1992. Brantford won the award in 1993 followed by Thunder Bay who won the award 2 straight seasons in 1994 and 1995. The Flint Generals followed as regular season champs in 1996 and 1997 before Quad City took the Tarry Cup in 1998. Muskegon earned the award in 1999 and then Quad City followed as the recipient of the Tarry Cup for 3 additional consecutive seasons in 2000, 2001 and 2002.
The Tarry Cup is Fort Wayne's 6th regular season championship in it's 51-year anniversary. The Fort Wayne franchise last won a regular season championship while a member of the International Hockey League. The Komets collected their 5th Huber Trophy with a 48-26-8 record and 104 points in the 82-game IHL 1986-87 season.
The Tarry Cup champion Komets will receive home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs which begin with a first-round, best-of-5 series against the Port Huron Beacons. Game 1 is scheduled for Wednesday night, April 2, at 7:35 in Fort Wayne at the Memorial Coliseum. Game 2 will be held Friday, April 4, at 7:35pm in Fort Wayne. The series moves to Port Huron for game 3 Sunday, April 6, at 4:05pm Fort Wayne time. If game 4 is necessary, it will be played at Port Huron Monday, April 7, at 6:05pm Fort Wayne time. If a 5th game is necessary, it will be played on Fort Wayne ice Tuesday, April 8 at 7:35pm.
