Sea Wolves Propel Past Ice Pilots, 4-3 in the Shootout

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The first place Mississippi Sea Wolves won their third straight game by defeating the Pensacola Ice Pilots, 4-3 in the shootout.

Mississippi (44-23-4) also maintains its three-point lead over second place Louisiana in the Southwest Division. The magic number for the Sea Wolves to clinch first place in the division is one.

Pensacola (33-29-8) extends its winless streak to 10 games, going 0-8-2 over that span.

The Sea Wolves opened the scoring on the power play. Dave Paradise rifled a shot from the top of the left circle overpowering Maxime Gingras. The 38th goal of the season for Paradise came at 8:08.

The Ice Pilots replied at 10:58. Greg Pankewicz poked a loose puck over the goal line past Greg Gardner, tying the score 1-1. The marker for Pankewicz was his 42nd of the campaign.

In the second, Mississippi connected on another man advantage. At 9:24, Paradise slapped a right circle shot by Gingras, making it 2-0 for the Sea Wolves.

Mississippi goaltender Gardner turned away all 13 shots in the middle stanza, including an outstanding diving save as he lunged to his right to deny a point shot by Brad Dexter on a Pensacola power play.

In the third, Walby gave the Sea Wolves their one-goal lead back again sliding in a power play goal. The goal for Walby tied his own team-record by netting his 42nd of the year to give Mississippi a 3-2 lead.

In the dying seconds, Pensacola was given a man advantage and pulled Gingras for another attacker. Pankewicz slapped in his league-leading 43rd goal of the season with 26 seconds left in regulation, sending the game to extra time.

Gardner was superb throughout including a game-saver in overtime, denying Jeremy Van Hoof in the slot.

In the shootout, Walby and Kent Davyduke scored for Mississippi. Pankewicz was the fourth shooter for Pensacola and Gardner made another key save to backstop the Sea Wolves to victory.

Gardner stopped 41-of-44 shots, improving to 32-16-4. Gingras turned away 33-fo-36, falling to 23-24-8.

Mississippi converted on 3-of-8 power play opportunities. Pensacola went 2-for-6 with the man advantage.

The Sea Wolves completes their regular season tonight at 7:05 p.m. at Jackson.

Mississippi returns home for the opening games of the 2003 Kelly Cup Playoffs Southwest Division Semifinals. Game 1 will be played Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum, against a yet to be determined opponent. Game 2 will be played at the Wolves Den on Friday, April 4 at 7:35 p.m.
