Kane County Cougars News Release
APPLETON, Wisc. - Corey Brown and Matt Ray each smacked a three-run homer Friday night for the Kane County Cougars, but it wasn't enough in an 8-6 loss against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in front of 2,572 at Time Warner Cable Field. The Cougars never led in the game and lost the opener of a road series for the first time this season. Scott Moore (1-2) made his first start of the season but struggled and couldn't make it out of the third inning after yielding four runs in 2 1/3 frames. Brad Hertzler took over and kept the Rattlers at bay through the fifth, setting up Brown's long, three-run shot in the sixth that made it 4-3. It was Brown's first homer since April 18 in Lansing.
With the Cougars back in the game, reliever Lance Sewell wobbled in the bottom of the sixth, giving up four runs -- two earned -- for an 8-3 game. That score remained until the ninth when the Cougars managed a rally against three different Wisconsin relievers. With pinch-hitter Jonathan Johnston and Carlos Arrieche aboard, Ray pulled a three-run blast over the fence in right to cut it to 8-6. Then Larry Cobb singled and with two outs Brown walked to put the tying run on base, but Justin Souza got Jake Smith to fly to the warning track to end the game.
The Cougars (25-13) and Timber Rattlers (18-19) continue their three-game set Saturday afternoon at 1:05 CT when Scott Hodsdon (1-4, 5.08) squares off against Nathan Adcock (1-2, 2.90).
