Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers are the owners of a four-game winning streak after holding off the Kane County Cougars for an 8-6 win Friday night on Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Alex Liddi had a pair of hits and drove in three runs for the Rattlers to pace the offense. Kane County scored three times in the top of the ninth and got the go-ahead run to the plate, but Justin Souza got the final out to preserve the win.
Cougar starting pitcher Scott Moore was making his first start of the season after nine relief appearances and the Rattlers (18-19) knocked him out of the game in the bottom of the third inning.
Edilio Colina started the rally with a one out single. Gavin Dickey followed with an RBI double. Liddi knocked in a run with a single. Then, Calvin Beamon completed the barrage of four straight hits with an RBI triple for a 3-0 lead. Later in the inning, Beamon swiped home on the back end of a double steal for a 4-0 lead.
Rattler starter Edward Paredes cruised until the sixth. He had retired 11 straight, but Michael Lissman sent a fly ball to center that dropped in for a hit after Maximo Mendez lost the ball in the lights. Larry Cobb singled to put two runners on base. Paredes struck out the next batter, but Corey Brown got Kane County on the board with a three-run homer to center. After a walk, Paredes left in favor of reliever Travis Mortimore. The Rattler lefty walked the first batter he faced, but got the next two batters to keep the Rattlers in front 4-3.
The Rattler bats started up again in the bottom of the sixth. Denny Amonte drew a lead off walk and went to third on a double by Israel Nunez. An RBI grounder by Mendez drove in the first run. Colina doubled to score Nunez for a 6-3 lead. An error kept the inning alive and Liddi made the Cougars pay with a two-run double and an 8-3 lead.
That was just enough for the Rattler bullpen to protect. Mortimore worked a scoreless seventh. Ryan Moorer pitched a scoreless eighth. But Walter Suriel made it interesting in the top of the ninth.
Pinch hitter Jonathan Johnston doubled to start the inning and Carlos Arrieche singled to put runners at the corners. Matt Ray blasted a three run homer to right-center and the Cougars were within 8-6. Suriel got a strikeout for the first out of the inning, but left after giving up a single to Cobb.
Jose Escalona relieved Suriel to get Greg Dowling to pop out for the second out, but he would walk Brown to put the tying runs on base and bring the potential lead run to the plate.
However, Souza got Jake Smith to fly out to deep center to end the game.
Game two of the three game series is set for Saturday afternoon. Nathan Adcock (1-2, 2.90) is the scheduled starter for the Rattlers. Scott Hodsdon (1-4, 5.08) is set to start for the Cougars. Game time is 1:05pm.
