FORT WAYNE, IN---Base hits and runs were scarce when Fort Wayne and South Bend met for a doubleheader on Friday night at Memorial Stadium.

In game one, the Wizards collected seven hits while limiting the Silver Hawks to three, in winning by a score of 3-0.

In the nightcap, it was South Bend that got just a little bit better pitching, holding Fort Wayne to just a pair of hits while picking up six of their own, as they won by a score of 1-0, thus splitting the doubleheader that was played in front of 3,778 fans.

In the opener, a single by Drew Cumberland scored Luis Durango (who doubled) from second base in the bottom of the first inning gave the Wizards a 1-0 lead.

Ali Solis increased the lead when he belted his second home run of the season with two outs and Zach Brown on at first base off Silver Hawk starting pitcher Cristian Beltre in the bottom of the second, increasing the Fort Wayne advantage to 3-0.

That was more than enough of a lead for the tandem of Allen Harrington and Jackson Quezada to work with.

Harrington allowed just three hits, walked one, and struck out five in six innings of work.

The hits he gave up were a two-out single to Taylor Harbin in the first inning, a lead off single to Konrad Schmidt in the third inning, and another single to Schmidt leading off in the seventh.

Quezada replaced Harrington at the start of the seventh inning and retired the side in order to end the game.

Harrington (2-1) was the winning pitcher, while Beltre (3-3) took the loss, with Quezada picking up his fifth save of the season.

In game two, it was left-hander Tom Layne of South Bend who turned out to be the best pitcher on the mound.

Layne, who was making his first start after 11 consecutive appearances out of the bullpen, allowed just a lead off single to Justin Baum in the second inning, and a double off the bat of Angel Mercado at the start of the fifth inning during his six inning stint, and, at one point retired nine Wizard batters in a row.

He departed with his team having a 1-0 lead, thanks to a two-out single by Ramon Ramirez off Fort Wayne starter Matt Teague that scored Sean Coughlin from second base in the bottom of the second.

Jeff Dietz came in from the bullpen and pitched a scoreless seventh inning to preserve the ninth win for the Silver Hawks in their last 12 games.

Layne (1-1) was credited with the victory, while Teague (3-2) suffered the tough loss; with Dietz collecting his second save in three save opportunities.

The four-game series is now tied at a win apiece, with game three scheduled for Saturday afternoon.

The starting pitchers are expected to be right-handers Jeremy McBryde (1-3, 5.28) of the Wizards and Josh Collmenter (2-3, 5.73) of South Bend. The game can be heard on both the radio (ESPN Radio 1380) and the Internet (www.fortwaynewizards.com), beginning with the Hupe Insurance Services Pre-Game Show at 3:40 p.m. (EDT).
