Lansing Lugnuts News Release
Comstock Park, Mich.- The Lansing Lugnuts and West Michigan Whitecaps split a doubleheader Friday night at Fifth Third Ballpark to open a four-game weekend series.
Lansing took the nightcap by a final score of 5-0, as Randy Boone tossed the Lugnuts first complete-game shutout of the season.
Boone (4-1) was spectacular as he allowed just three hits while fanning seven in the start. No Whitecap reached past second base in the game.
The Lugnuts offense helped him out early by scoring four times in the opening frame. Darin Mastroianni led the inning off by drawing a walk and then stealing both second and third base. Justin Jackson's single to center drove home Mastroianni to make it a 1-0 game.
Lansing would then load the bases against starter Manny Miguelez later in the inning. John Tolisano's sacrifice fly plated Jackson to push it to 2-0. Raul Barron later laced a single into left field that scored Matt Liuzza. Outfielder Kody Kaiser's error also allowed C.J. Ebarb to cross the plate, giving Lansing the 4-0 advantage.
Manny Miguelez (1-2) suffered the loss for the Whitecaps as he did not last beyond the first inning. He gave up all four early runs on just four hits.
The Whitecaps snagged game one of the twin-bill 6-3, thanks in large part to a four-run third.
West Michigan already had a 2-0 lead heading into the frame, but they were able to break loose for four runs as they sent all nine batters to the plate.
Chris Carlson's bases loaded sacrifice fly brought home the inning's first run to make it a 3-0 game. Then with two men out, Kody Kaiser laced a double into the right-center field gap that plated Justin Henry and Ronnie Bourquin to push the lead to 5-0. Joe Tucker's RBI infield single completed the scoring at 6-0.
Lansing battled back in the sixth inning by plating three runs, highlighted by John Tolisano's RBI double to left. The Lugnuts twice had the tying run at the plate in the inning, but could not get closer than three.
Alfredo Figaro (5-1) got the win for the Caps by tossing 5 1/3 innings while allowing three runs on six hits.
Trystan Magnuson (0-5) took the loss after surrendering five runs in just 2 2/3 innings of work.
Rudy Darrow retired all five Lugnuts hitters that he faced to earn his second save.
Lansing (20-20) and West Michigan (21-18) will play the third game of the set at Fifth Third Ballpark Saturday night. Luis Perez (0-4, 6.66) will hurl for the Lugnuts, while Lauren Gagnier (1-4, 5.75) will take the mound for the Whitecaps. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
