Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (May 17, 2008) - The Burlington Bees opened a seven-game home stand last night at Community Field as they lost to Quad Cities 8-1. David Lough and Alwin Perez each had two hits in the contest but it was not enough as the Bees dropped to 15-24 on the season.
Matt Mitchell got the start for the Bees and struggled from the beginning. He allowed one run in the first inning and it came before he registered a single out. In the second, he allowed two more runs and then one more in the third as the Bees were in a 4-0 hole after three innings.
Mitchell settled down in fourth and fifth innings where he put the River Bandits down in order. Those were the only two innings where no one reached base for Quad Cities. Mitchell came back out for the sixth and allowed a homerun and a double before he was lifted for Joe Augustine. Mitchell ended up pitching five innings allowing six runs, five of which were earned, on ten hits with five strikeouts.
The Bees did get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jason Taylor was walked to lead the inning off. He stole second and advanced to third on a ground-out before scoring on a Wilson Tucker RBI ground-out. That was the only run the Bees would score in the game. Quad Cities added two unearned runs off of Augustine in the eighth inning.
The Bees had seven hits on the night but also committed three errors. Lough and Perez had two hits each with Lough having both a double and a triple. Tony Bradley pitched one inning allowing just one hit with one strikeout.
Game two of the three game series between the Bees and Quad Cities is scheduled for Saturday night at Community Field. Alex Caldera will start for the Bees. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30. The game can be heard on 1490 KBUR and online at www.GoBees.com.
