Kane County Cougars News Release

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. - The Kane County Cougars and West Michigan locked horns in a classic pitcher's duel Monday night at Fifth Third Ballpark, and the Cougars eventually fell, 1-0, in 10 innings. The injury-laden Cougars, who had only one hit in the game, ended their six-game road trip at 2-4, dropping two of three in both South Bend and West Michigan.

Starter Shawn Haviland pitched six innings of three-hit ball. He walked three and fanned six, matching Whitecaps starter Casey Crosby, a Kane County native, zero for zero. Crosby pitched five hitless innings and fanned eight. Both hurlers got a no-decision. It was Haviland's first quality start since June 21.

The Cougars got their first and only hit in the seventh against Anthony Shawler when Dusty Coleman nailed a clean single, but they never had multiple men on base at a time. Josue Selenis worked two scoreless innings, and Justin Murray (2-1) logged a run-free ninth before yielding the game-ending run in the 10th. Tyler Stohr (3-3) got the win for the Whitecaps (15-9, 58-36).

The Cougars (13-11, 54-40) are off Tuesday and start a six-game homestand Wednesday night at 6:30 CDT when they open a three-game set with the Fort Wayne TinCaps (20-4, 65-29). Kenny Smalley (8-3, 2.15) will face Mike Watt (5-2, 3.86).
