West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The reigning Midwest League Player of the Week, Ben Guez, delivered the game-winning hit to bring home Avisail Garcia in the bottom of the tenth inning as the West Michigan Whitecaps edged the Kane County Cougars, 1-0, at Fifth Third Ballpark. Monday night's game was the finale of the three game series and the last game of the home-stand. The Whitecaps win the series, two-games-to-one.

Pitching defined the third game of the series. While the offenses took control in both game one and game two, the Whitecaps and Cougars put forth dominating pitching performances.

Whitecaps' starter Casey Crosby threw one of his best outings as he did not allow a hit or a run in 5 innings of work. Crosby walked 2 batters and struck out eight. He left at the end of the fifth because of pitch count concerns.

Kane County got a great outing from starter Shawn Haviland. Haviland had lost his last three decisions, but Monday night he tossed 6 shutout innings, giving up 3 hits, 3 walks, and grabbing 6 strikeouts.

Anthony Shawler was also critical to the Whitecaps' success. The reliever picked up where Crosby left off as he went 4 innings surrendering just 1 hit, 1 walk and picking up 3 strikeouts. Shawler kept the game scoreless until the tenth.

‘Caps closer Tyler Stohr worked a perfect tenth inning for the win. Stohr induced a ground out and then struck two men out.

Avisail Garcia and Brent Wyatt each had 2 hits for the ‘Caps.

The tenth inning began with an infield single by Avisail Garcia. Brent Wyatt came through with a one-out single to put men at first and second. After a strikeout of Brandon Douglas, Ben Guez ripped the game-winning hit to center on a 3-2 pitch with two outs to give the Whitecaps the win.

West Michigan will enjoy a league-wide off day on Tuesday before heading to Quad Cities for a three-game series beginning Wednesday night at 8:00 p.m. EST.
