Bees defeat South Bend, take series

South Bend, IN (July 20, 2009) - The Burlington Bees defeated South Bend 2-1 Monday night to win the three-game series two games to one. Nick Francis had two hits, scored the game-winning run in the ninth and made a game-saving catching in the bottom of the ninth as the Bees rallied from one run down to win.

South Bend opened the scoring with one run in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Bees answered that run with one run in the top of the seventh. Jason Taylor led the inning off by being hit by a pitch and moved first to third on a Francis single. David Wood then singled down the third base line to score Taylor and tie the game.

The Bees took the lead in the top of the ninth inning. Francis led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Jose Bonilla then singled to score Francis and give the Bees a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the ninth inning with two outs and a runner on at second, Francis made a sensational running catch to secure the victory for the Bees.

Mike Montgomery got the start for the Bees and did not allow a hit in his first five innings. He ended up pitching six innings allowing one run on three hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. Eric Basurto picked up his first win pitching two no-hit innings with three strikeouts and no walks. Barry Bowden recorded his seventh save pitching the ninth inning allowing one hit with two strikeouts and no walks. As a staff, Bees pitchers had 12 strikeouts and just one walk.

The Bees had five hits in the game. Francis was the only Bee with more than one hit going 2-3 with a run scored.
