Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Quad Cities River Bandits lost twice to the Fort Wayne TinCaps on Monday, falling by a 4-1 score in the completion of Sunday's suspended game before being shut out, 1-0, during the regularly scheduled series finale at Parkview Field.
After exploding for 15 runs to win Friday night's series finale in Dayton, Quad Cities (10-13, 40-53) mustered just one run on 12 hits over the weekend while suffering a three-game sweep at the hands of the first-place TinCaps. Fort Wayne (20-4, 65-29) scored just two runs while clinching a pair of wins on Monday - the same number of saves earned by closer Brad Brach over the course of the evening.
To start the day, the River Bandits and TinCaps completed Sunday's suspended game. The action resumed with Fort Wayne holding a 3-1 lead thanks in part to a two-run homer in the opening frame by Jaff Decker the day before. When play began on Monday, Travis Mitchell stood in for Quad Cities with a 1-2 count, a runner on second and one out in the top of the fifth.
But the TinCaps bullpen dominated the conclusion of Sunday's game. Eduardo Perez (3-1) struck out Mitchell on one pitch and went on to earn the win with 3.2 frames of scoreless relief. Blake Tekotte added a run-scoring single in the seventh to push the lead to 4-1 and Midwest League saves leader Brad Brach (23) did the rest, working around a two-out walk in the ninth to lock down his first save of the night.
Jorge Rondon (0-1) suffered the loss without even throwing a pitch on Monday. In his first River Bandits start of the year, he threw four innings on Sunday and allowed three runs - two earned - on three hits and one homer.
After a 30-minute break, the regularly scheduled game began with another early run for Fort Wayne. Daniel Robertson lined a one-out double into the corner in left field, coming around to score later in the frame courtesy of a two-out single by Allan Dykstra.
As it turned out, that was all the offense the home team needed. Erik Davis (9-4) picked up the win thanks to five shutout frames, fanning five while allowing just three singles and walking one. In the final frame, Brach retired the side in order to notch his second save of the night and pad his league-leading total to 24.
Meanwhile, River Bandits' starter Arquimedes Nieto (1-9) suffered yet another tough-luck loss. The righty bounced back from Dykstra's first-inning single to give up just two hits the rest of the way and did not allow another runner to advance past first. He threw five innings in all, yielding one run on four hits while fanning five and issuing no walks.
During the second game of the series, Alex Castellanos went 0-for-4 as his 12-game hitting streak came to a close. During the stretch Castellanos hit .392 and now boasts the River Bandits' two longest hitting streaks of the year thanks to a 15-game streak he put together in late May and early June.
UP NEXT: The River Bandits return to the Quad Cities for a six-game homestand beginning on Wednesday and kicking off with a Modern Woodmen Half-Price Night in addition to the weekly promotions of Rhythm City Casino's Guaranteed Prize WINS-day and an IH Mississippi Valley Credit Union Youth Night.
