Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

GARY, Ind. - RailCats starting pitcher Morgan Coombs retired the first 17 batters he faced, as he was perfect through 5 2/3 innings en route to a 6-0 two-hit shutout victory over the Wichita Wingnuts on Monday night.

Coombs took a perfect game into the sixth inning and after getting the first two batters out, Mike Conroy took the first pitch deep to left-center field over the head of Adam Klein and off the wall. Coombs then walked the next two hitters to load the bases but got John Rodriguez to fly out to right to end the threat and keep the Wingnuts scoreless.

Brian Kolb hit a two-out single in the second inning and stole second against Wingnuts starter Jose Perez. Sean Smith drove Kolb home with a single to right to give the 'Cats a 1-0 lead.

The RailCats added two more in the third on a sacrifice fly by Craig Maddox and a run-scoring single by Mike Rohde. Mike Massaro hit a sac fly in the fourth to make it 4-0. Rohde came around to score from first on a Kyle Haines double off the wall in the fifth inning and the RailCats tacked on another in the seventh when Mike Coles scored on an errant throw.

RailCats pitchers have now thrown three quality starts in the last five games and the team has won four of its last five. With the win, the RailCats have reached .500 for the first time since May 25th when they were 4-4.

The second game of the three game series is Tuesday at 7:10 PM. Derek Drage (2-1, 4.85) will take the mound for the RailCats against right-hander Derek Blacksher (2-1, 5.16).
