March 3, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Bakersfield Condors News Release
Anchorage, Alaska - Joe Watkins stopped 22 shots for his first shutout of the season and Jason Jackman scored twice and added an assist as the shorthanded Bakersfield Condors defeated the Alaska Aces 3-0 front of 3,066 fans at the Sullivan Arena on Tuesday night.
Bakersfield took the ice tonight with just 14 skaters and two goaltenders. But it didn't matter in the first period. Johan Astrom took a centering feed from Jason Jackman and buried his team-leading 23rd of the season to lead it 1-0 through 20 minutes of play. The Aces had the shot lead in the first 9-6.
The second period remained scoreless until the final six minutes of the period. Then the line of Devin Francon - Jackman - Darren Shakotko connected again. Jackman notched his third goal of the season and second point of the night, slithering through the Aces defense straight to the net and slipping home the second Bakersfield goal of the night. Shakotko, moved from defense to wing tonight, picked up an assist, as did Francon, who was playing for the first time since December 12th.
Bakersfield's penalty killing was strong on the night. They stopped two third period power plays and six in the game to hold the lead. They added to that lead with a power play tally of their own with less than three minutes remaining. Jackman netted his second of the game when his breakaway was stopped by G Dan Murphy but his defenseman, diving to break up the chance, crashed into him and forced him back into the net. The Condors defense wrapped up the Aces and held them to just five third period shots. Watkins finished the night with 22 saves for his first shutout of the season.
The Condors remain in Anchorage for another match against the Aces on Wednesday night at 8:00pm Pacific Time. They return home to play the Long Beach Ice Dogs on Sunday, March 7th at 2:00pm. All fans in attendance will receive a Condors "Splash Down" Poster, courtesy of Bright House Networks, Spanish Radio Group, Everlasting Pools.
