Hershey Loans D-Man to Reading…MacIver Acquired From Peoria

READING, PA – The Reading Royals, ECHL affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings, have announced that defenseman Tomas Slovak has been loaned to the club by the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears. Reading has acquired defenseman Doug MacIver from the Peoria Rivermen for financial considerations.

Slovak, 21, returns to Reading after a two and a half month stint in Hershey. After starting the season with the Bears, Slovak spent 11 games with the Royals from mid-November through mid-December. He posted two goals and six points, along with 26 penalty minutes and a +2 rating. His strongest outing was on December 12 in Dayton when he posted two goals, both on the power play, and an assist in an 8-4 Royals win. The rookie defenseman has appeared in 41 games with Hershey this season and posted three goals and 11 points with 16 minutes in penalties. Slovak is currently under contract with the Colorado Avalanche. The Slovakia native is expected to be in the line up tonight against the Johnstown Chiefs.

MacIver, 23, has appeared in 41 games this season with Charlotte, Fresno and Peoria of the ECHL. He has posted a goal and five assists along with 184 penalty minutes. MacIver appeared in 27 games with the Jackson Bandits in his rookie season in 2002-03 under Royals coach Derek Clancey. He tallied one goal and four points with 103 penalty minutes. He also appeared in one playoff game and was held scoreless. The King City, Ontario native has two games of AHL experience as well. He suited up for two contests with the Rochester Americans in 2001-02. The 6-foot-5, 223-pound defenseman spent time with Belleville, Sarnia and Kingston of the OHL. In 2000 and 2001 he was teammates with Royals goaltender Peter Hamerlik in Kingston.

The Reading Royals begin the first of seven straight games at home tonight against the Johnstown Chiefs. The Keystone Cup Series faces off with the eighth contest between these two clubs. It's Ladies Night in the Sovereign Center sponsored by Performance Toyota and the Sheraton Reading Hotel. Saturday, the Royals host the first place Wheeling Nailers at 7:05 p.m. Reading will be wearing special Penske racing jerseys, which will be auctioned off live at the conclusion of the game with a portion of the proceeds going to Royals charities. Ryan Newman's Nascar will be on display during the game and the first 1,000 fans receive Crown Royals Carabiners. Finally Sunday afternoon, the Royals tangle with the defending Kelly Cup Champion, Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies at 1:05 p.m. It's Kid's Day in the Sovereign Center, with the first 2,000 fans receive beanie pucks courtesy of Reading Area Community College. Plus, it's the finals of the Reading Royals Idol competition.
