
Checkers return home on three-game winning streak

(Charlotte, NC - Wednesday, March 3) The Charlotte Checkers bring a three-game winning streak into this weekend's games as they head into the final month of the season fighting for a playoff spot in the ECHL's Southern Division of the Eastern Conference. Charlotte will play five of its next six games on Cricket Arena ice including home games this Friday and Saturday night against the Dayton Bombers.
PLAYOFF PICTURE: As of Wednesday, the Checkers are in fifth place in the ECHL' s Southern Division of the Eastern Conference with 65 points. The top four teams in the division qualify for post-season play. Charlotte trails third place South Carolina and Greensboro by only two points. Charlotte is only five points behind second-place Florida with four games in hand on the Everblades.
OVERALL: 29-21-7 = 65 POINTS
HOME: 11-11-5 = 27 POINTS
ROAD: 18-10-2 = 38 POINTS

The Checkers will play a short, two-game season series with the Dayton Bombers with games this Friday and Saturday night at Cricket Arena. The Bombers come into Charlotte this weekend on a five-game losing streak and in last place in the Northern Division of the Eastern Conference. The Bombers' Jason Deskins is tied for second in the ECHL with four shorthand goals. The Bombers are 8-4-1 when leading after the first period and 13-9-5 in one-goal games. Following the weekend series with the Checkers this Friday and Saturday, Dayton will head home to host Toledo on Sunday. The Bombers are affiliated with the Columbus Blue Jackets of the National Hockey League, and the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League. Lifetime, the Checkers are 8-4-1 against Dayton.

Sunday, March 7: Charlotte @ Florence - 7:30 p.m.
Charlotte will play their final game of the five-game season series in Florence this Sunday afternoon. The Checkers are 2-0-1 against the Pride so far this season. Charlotte won the lone meeting between the two teams in Florence on January 4 by a score of 3-1. The Pride enters this week in sixth place in the ECHL's Southern Division of the Eastern Conference with a record of 22-28-7 for 51 points. The Pride is 5-0-0 this season when former Checkers winger Eric Naud scores a goal. Florence is coached by Perry Florio and is affiliated with the NHL's Chicago Blackhawks and the AHL's Norfolk Admirals. Lifetime the Checkers are 24-18-5.

· Checkers went 3-0-0 last week.
· The Checkers are 10-3-2 under new Head Coach Derek Wilkinson since he took over Jan 29
· Charlotte is 7-2-1 in its last 10 games.
· The Checkers lead the ECHL in short-handed goals with 13.
· Charlotte is tied with Columbia and Peoria for the most road wins so far this season at (18).
· Center Richard Keyes netted a hat trick Saturday against Greensboro, and had five points in three games last week.
· Rookie right wing Mike Wirll had five assists in three games last week, and has scored at least a point in 13 of his last 15 games with 9g, 10a = 19pts in that span.
· Left wing Lucas Lawson, despite playing in only 21 games, leads the Checkers in power-play goals with six. Lawson had three goals last week, and has 7g, 7a, = 14 pts in his last 11 games.
· Defenseman Kengo Ito is tied Dave Inman for the best plus/minus on the club with a +14
· Defenseman Marc. St. John leads the ECHL in short-handed assists with five.
· The Checkers are 20th on the power play at 15.78% while 4th on the penalty kill at 87.41%.
· Only three players (non-goalies) failed to get at least one point in the Checkers 6-5 win over Greensboro on Saturday night.
· The Checkers game at Greensboro last Thursday, February 26 was postponed due to weather. The game has been rescheduled for Monday, March 22 at 7:00 p.m. at the Greensboro Coliseum.
