Falcons Stung by South Carolina's Power Play
March 3, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Fresno Falcons News Release
FRESNO, Calif. â The South Carolina Stingrays used three power play goals to defeat the Fresno Falcons on Tuesday at Save Mart Center by a score of 4-1.
South Carolina's Marty Clapton blistered a one-time slapshot from the base of the right circle to give his club a 1-0 lead on the power play 9:47 into the hockey game. Fresno would respond with a power play effort of their own when Mike Mathers dragged a rebound from behind the net and past Stingrays goaltender Kirk Daubenspeck for his sixth of the year less than two minutes later to tie the game at one. The visitors converted again with the extra man at 17:29 of the first off a pretty tic-tac-toe passing play from Chris Allen to Ed Courtenay and on to Jim Lorentz, who finished on the forehand past Falcons netminder Terry Friesen.
South Carolina extended their lead to 3-1 in the second period with their third power play goal in four chances. Trevor Johnson and Allen combined to find Curtis Huppe at 12:39 to give the Stingrays a two-goal edge into the third.
Adding one more for insurance was South Carolina's Jeff Boulanger at 7:54 of the final period off a clean break-away after a bouncing puck eluded the Falcons' defense.
The loss keeps Fresno winless at home this year (0-5-1) against non-Pacific Division foes and drops them to 16-35-6 overall.
The team attempts to break a three-game losing slide tomorrow when they welcome the Las Vegas Wranglers to Save Mart Center at 7 p.m. THIS GAME WAS ORIGINALLY SCHEDULED FOR MARCH 5TH. ALL TICKETS ISSUED FOR THE 5TH SHOULD BE USED FOR ADMISSION TOMORROW NIGHT.
The first 1,000 fans at tomorrow's game will receive a set of Falcons trading cards.
