Condors Deal for Pair
December 14, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Bakersfield Condors News Release
Bakersfield, Calif. - The Bakersfield Condors have refused to settle for their National Conference West Division leading record and have acquired a pair of players in two separate trades this week to improve the team. On Monday afternoon, Head Coach Marty Raymond picked up C Tony Lawrence from the Texas Wildcatters in exchange for the ECHL rights to RW Curtis Huppe. Coach Raymond continued today by sending the rights to C Steve Slonina to the Toledo Storm for C Ty Hennes. Neither player traded from the Condors has played a game in North America this season.
Lawrence, 24, is playing in his third full season in the pro ranks. Last year with Texas, the Minnesota native posted 17 goals and 41 points in 56 games. This season, he has 3g-5a-8pts in 22 games with the Wildcatters. Prior to competing in his rookie campaign with Quad City (United Hockey League), Lawrence compiled prolific numbers in college, tallying 139 points in three seasons with St. Thomas College in Minnesota.
Hennes, 25, is in his rookie season after spending the last four years at Boston College. Another American, hailing from Kent, Washington, Hennes had 3g-5a-8pts in 20 games with the Storm this season, and played against the Condors earlier this season while with Toledo. As a freshman he was a member of Boston College's National Championship team and this spring, as a senior, he captained a BC squad that advanced to the Frozen Four before bowing out to Maine.
Hennes' first career goal was a shorthanded tally and Lawrence scored the first shorthanded goal in Wildcatters history. The Condors have lost two of their top penalty killers this season, with Mike Hofstrand on IR and Connor James recalled to Manchester (American Hockey League).
"We just acquired two really good hockey players," said Raymond. "In Tony we got a big guy who can play at center or on the wing. Ty is more of a natural center. He's like a bulldog on the ice and really fits the mold for our hockey team."
The Condors travel to Las Vegas for two games against the Wranglers on Thursday and Friday nights. Both games start at 7:00 p.m. Saturday's game against the Idaho Steelheads at Centennial Garden is poised to be a memorable one. The Condors are asking all fans to be a part of World History and attempt to set a new mark for the World's Largest Pillow Fight in the Guinness Book of World Records. Originally standing at just over 1,000 people, the record was recently set at 2,773 in September. With the event just a few short days away, the Condors beg for the assistance of all their faithful fans, plead for all involved to ration their pillows. The Day of Fluffy Reckoning will soon be here, and that record MUST FALL. The pillows will be donated to the Bakersfield Homeless Shelter at the end of the event. Further details are to follow.
It's not too late to secure premium seat locations for 2004-2005 Condors season by purchasing a Condors Mini-plan. Also, what better place to have a Christmas party than at a Condors game? The Condors offer group discounts for fans that plan on attending a Condors game with friends, family, or co- workers. Contact the Condors office at 324-PUCK (7825) for more information.
