Gladiators Power Past Gators

Lafayette, LA The Louisiana IceGators returned home after a week long road trip and were defeated by the Gwinnett Gladiators 4-2 on Tuesday night. Despite a shorthanded goal by the home team, special teams were the difference as Gwinnett scored 2 power play goals and kept the Gators 0-7 with the man advantage.

      The Gators fell behind 1-0 after the first period as the Gladiators tallied on the power play at the 16:51 mark. Mike Vigilante sped in from the right point and one timed a pass through the legs of Nathan Marsters for the early lead. It was Vigilante's 12th of the season, assists going to Brad Schell and Jeff Campbell.

      A wild 2nd period had each team scoring twice as Gwinnett led 3-2 after 40 minutes. Jeff Campbell's backhander from the far post at 8:29 extended the Gladiators lead to 2-0, his 12th of the year. The Gators answered at 9:35 as Wes Mason scored his 11th, following his own rebound and tapping past Sean Fields to make the score 2-1. David Bararuk got the assist on the goal that snapped a scoreless streak of 141:55, dating back to last Friday night in Columbia. Chris Durno's 8th of the season, a wrist shot from the right circle at 15:55 returned the Gladiators two goal cushion. The Gators answered at 17:07 with their 3rd shorthanded goal of the season. Off a scramble in front, defenseman Jake Ortmeyer lifted the puck into the net for his 3rd of the season and a 3-2 Gwinnett advantage.

      The IceGators would get no closer in the 3rd period. The turning point happened at the 6:57 mark of the period, just after a shorthanded break away by Mark Rooneem was denied by Fields, Durno recovered his own shot in the slot and put a wrist shot high over Marsters for a 4-2 score on his 9th of the season and Gwinnett's 2nd lamp lighter of the night on the power play.From there the Gladiators defense was solid as they locked the down the two goal win. The Gators outshot the Gladiators 44-37, Gwinnett was 2-5 on the power play, the Gators 0-7.The loss puts Louisiana's record at 10-7-3 (23 points), they trail first place Gwinnett by seven points in the South Division race.

The IceGators return home to the Frozen Swamp tomorrow to face the Gwinnett Gladiators at 7:05pm. It is the continuation of "Toy Drive" week, culminating in Teddy Bear Toss night on Friday December 17 when the Gators take on the Texas Wildcatters .Tickets for these and all IceGators home games are available now.
