Mississippi ends Victoria's unbeaten streak at home

Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC – There are no puns or no funny clichés. There is nothing a fan or a writer can say that can describe the final game between the Mississippi Sea Wolves and the Victoria Salmon Kings, better than ugly. With a handful of regulars out of the line-up either with injuries or suspensions, the Salmon Kings were a very tired hockey club. The 4-2 loss tells the story.

It didn't help that the team has played six games in eight nights, or that blue liner Nate Forster went down early with a concussion after going heavily into the boards, but as defenseman Corey Smith said, "no excuses, we hurt ourselves."

Salmon Kings Ryan Finnerty and Mike Barrie left the game. Finnerty was assessed a 10 minute misconduct late in the third and Mike Barrie was out of control. Barrie was given his first of two 10 minute misconducts is the second period and then in the third after serving a four minute penalty for spearing he came out of the box and lost it. He was originally sent to his bench and on his way there he started jawing with Sea Wolves players on the ice. After getting to the bench that is when flew off the handle. Barrie was on edge all night, he finished the game with 28 minutes in penalties.

It was only going to be a matter of time before the Salmon Kings came back to earth. With the score 2-2 in the second period, Barrie was in the box for roughing when Jay Legault scored the power-play marker from Louis Dumont and Chris Cava, on a weak shot that barely made it over the trapper of Salmon Kings goalie Jason Stone.

In the third Barrie was serving his double minor for spearing when Mike Jarmuth scored from Anthony Battaglia and Nicolas Corbiel. The teams combined for 48 minutes in penalties in a chippy battle that had players on both teams talking more to the referees than worrying about playing hockey.

There never was that feeling in building like there has been for the past week, but to the credit of the fans most of them waited till the end to see if there was to be any last minute heroics as there was on Monday. For those that did wait, they waited in vain. Mississippi goes to Alaska taking four of a possible six from Victoria on the 4-2 win. Victoria prepares to host San Diego. Both series begin on Friday December 17, 2004 and by then the Salmon Kings should have some healthy bodies back in their line-up.
