AHL Utica Comets

Comet Tales: Frederick Roy Player Preview

October 11, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Utica Comets News Release

When the Utica Comets arrive in Rochester on Friday to take on the Amerks in their first-ever regular season game, they could expect a lot of passionate opposition.

At the head of the Amerks line of hungry, enthusiastic, and driven players wearing the red, white, and blue colors is Frederick Roy. Now in his second season with the Buffalo Sabres top affiliate, Roy is committed to excellence on ice. Friday's contest at the Blue Cross Arena is extremely meaningful for both teams. The Comets want to win their inaugural American Hockey League game. A win of that magnitude, and on the road, could have a successful carry-over for the next day's challenge in the Capital District vs. the Devils. For Rochester, it is their second game of the season, the Amerks lost 8-1 last Friday at home to the defending Calder Cup Champions Grand Rapid Griffins.

Desire, passion, and adrenaline for both teams will be evident once the puck drops.

Look for second-year forward Frederick Roy, son of Hall of Famer and Colorado Avalanche coach Patrick Roy, to be leading the puck charge on whichever Comets goalie starts in net - Joacim Eriksson or Joe Cannata. "One year (experience) helped me a lot in being ready for the season," Roy, 22, tells. "I still have more to learn but I feel closer to being able to play in the National Hockey League." Calling this season's Amerks roster a 'group of extraordinary guys', Roy is confident that Rochester can match-up against any AHL team. Rochester is one of the oldest franchises in the AHL, celebrating their 50th consecutive season in 2005-2006.

Last season Roy collected 10 points (8-2-10) in 64 games. Preparing for this Amerks campaign, for Roy, was as routine as last season, and his year's playing for the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. "Nothing changed. Five times a week this summer I was in the gym", says Roy, winner of the Guy Carbonneau Trophy, awarded to the QMJHL's best defensive forward, in 2011-20012. "I wanted to put weight on and get stronger. Paying attention to details off the ice is just as important as on."

Stating that a player never wants to start a season with regrets, Roy tells of having a good training camp, and has traveled east from Buffalo with increased confidence for a winning season. Getting off on a winning note for Roy accurately labels how his father's team in the Rockies got out of the shoot this NHL season. "My father is very passionate. Coaching is something he wanted to try. He wants to win and and cares about his team," Frederick Roy explains. "I want to see him succeed."
