Bulldogs Slip Past IceCaps

St. John's IceCaps News Release

The St. John's IceCaps fell 3-2 to the Hamilton Bulldogs Friday night at Copps Coliseum in their first road game of the 2013-14 season.

Hamilton scored twice shorthanded - including Patrick Holland's eventual game-winner in the third period - to hand St. John's its first regulation loss of the season. Michael Blunden had a goal and an assist while Dustin Tokarski made 33 saves for the victory.

Andrew Gordon and Ben Chiarot scored for the IceCaps and Eddie Pasquale stopped 31-of-34 shots.

The Bulldogs got things started with a shorthanded marker just 4:26 into the first period. With the IceCaps on a man advantage, Hamilton went on the attack and Greg Pateryn finished off a nice passing play by one-timing a shot from the slot that beat Pasquale to give the home side a 1-0 lead.

St. John's tied it up midway through the frame on a power play goal from Gordon. Adam Lowry won the draw to Gordon, who passed to Brenden Kichton at the point and got a return pass on a tee from the rookie defenceman. Gordon one-timed a shot past a screened Tokarski to knot the score at one.

Early in the second, Blunden put the Bulldogs up 2-1 after the IceCaps couldn't get anything going on a power play. Joonas Nattinen found Blunden wide open in the slot and the Bulldogs forward wristed a shot that beat Pasquale high to give Hamilton the lead.

The see-saw battle continued as Hamilton native Chiarot pulled the IceCaps even once again. After killing off sustained pressure on a Bulldogs power play, Chiarot picked up a loose puck near the side boards and drove the net before making a beautiful backhand move to lift a shot over Tokarski's shoulder, tying the game at two.

In the third, the IceCaps surrendered yet another shorthanded goal, this time to Holland, who picked off an errant pass in the defensive zone and lugged the puck down the ice. Holland cut to the middle from the left side and fired a shot on goal that squeaked through Pasquale's pads to put Hamilton up for good.

The IceCaps continue their brief two-game road trip in Toronto Saturday afternoon (4:30 PM NT) to face the Marlies. Catch all the action with broadcaster Brian Rogers at stjohnsicecaps.com and 930AM This Is Newfoundland Labrador, or watch on Rogers TV (St. John's region) and AHL Live.
