Short-Handed Goals Lift Bulldogs Past IceCaps

HAMILTON, ONTARIO - The Hamilton Bulldogs notched two of three goals while short-handed on Friday night as they went on to defeat the St. John's IceCaps 3-2 in Hamilton's home and season opener at Copps Coliseum.

Bulldogs defenceman Greg Pateryn opened the scoring at 4:26 of the first period when he ripped a laser over the shoulder of IceCaps goaltender Eddie Pasquale. Forward Mike Blunden earned the only assist.

St. John's forward Andrew Gordon replied for the IceCaps on the power play at 10:01 of the first period, with assists to defenceman Brenden Kichton and forward Adam Lowry.

Hamilton regained the lead early in the second period when Blunden put the 'Dogs ahead at 1:55, with assists to forward Joonas Nattinen and defenceman Drew Schiestel.

Once again, St. John's replied just minutes later when defenceman Ben Chiarot, a Hamilton native, tied things at two. IceCaps forward Jason Jaffray and Jerome Samson drew assists.

Forward Patrick Holland's short-handed, unassisted goal at 5:15 of the third stood as the game-winner for the 'Dogs.

Dustin Tokarski got the start in goal for Hamilton, making 33 saves on 35 shots. Pasquale made 31 saves on 34 shots for St. John's.

The Bulldogs went 0-for-6 on the power play. The IceCaps went 1-for-6.
