Binghamton Senators News Release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Binghamton Senators took to the road for the first time this 2013-2014 season, losing to the Norfolk Admirals 5-0. Andrew Hammond made his first start of the year surrendering five goals off of 14 shots, in just one period of action.
The first marker came at 5:44 of the first period on a shorthanded goal by the Admiral's Devante Smith-Pelly. The remainder of the period the B-Sens found themselves in a barrage of penalty trouble. Being down a man for what seemed like the entire period, the B-Sens allowed four straight power-play goals. The first man advantage goal for the Admirals came from Alex Grant at the 14:41 of the period, doubling their lead to 2-0. Less than a minute later, Peter Holland added another power-play marker putting them up 3-0 with under five minutes to play in the opening period. Alex Grant added two more man advantage goals just over a minute apart to end the period, completing his bid for the 'hat trick' and sending the B-Sens to the locker room looking for answers.
The second period was much better for the B-Sens, as they were able to shutout the Admirals offensively. However, Binghamton could not muster a goal for the second consecutive period, despite managing 13 shots on goal. Nathan Lawson came in to start the period in relief of Hammond, stopping all four shots he faced.
Penalties plagued the final frame for both teams, with tensions finally boiling over among the skates at the 13:33 mark of the period. After Binghamton Senator's Wacey Hamilton was pushed back down to the ice by the Admiral's Nolan Yonkman, Senators Mark Borowiecki stepped in to defend. Binghamton's Matt Puempel and Buddy Robinson decided to follow their captain's move and drop the gloves with two Norfolk Admirals, in what was easily the largest scrum of the night. Puempel, along with the Admiral's Max Friberg both received a game misconduct for their secondary altercations, in addition to five minutes for fighting.
Despite outshooting the Admirals 22-10 following the opening period, the first period deficit was too much for the B-Sens to overcome. The final horn sounded with Norfolk taking the first of the two game set 5-0.
Nathan Lawson stopped all ten of the Admiral's shots he faced in relief of Binghamton's starter Andrew Hammond. Frederik Andersen played brilliantly for the host team, stopping all of the Senators chances in a 32 save shutout. Norfolk was good on four of 12 power play opportunities, while the Sens went zero for six. The Admiral's, Alex Grant, finished with three goals and an assist to earn the number one star of the game. The two teams combined for 120 total penalty minutes on the night, with nearly half coming in the final period.
The B-Sens will try and split the series with Norfolk tomorrow when they take the ice for a 7:15 p.m. puck drop. Fans can hear the 'Voice of the Binghamton Senators', Grady Whittenburg, on Oldies 96.9 FM or 680 AM for all of the play-by-play action.
